without question, Elvis Presley

Sarah Vaughn comes in a close second

Though I'm not really a fan of his, I guess Sinatra should be pretty high on that list.

In my opinion:

Johnny Cash
Stevie Wonder
Sam Cooke
Jon Anderson (of Yes)
Maddy Prior (of Steeleye Span)

Drew

Right on, Knox!

And it ain't Christina Agulira, Madonna, Toby Keith,
or anyone of those American Idol jack-offs!

Drew

Sinatra was lucky to end up in the Rat Pack.. decent singer though.. Dean Martin outclassed him...

Johnny Cash was brilliant... 'I Walk the Line'..

Sam Cooke did some really good stuff.

Stevie Wonder doesn't belong on the list of best ever.. sorry

Freddie Mercury, without a doubt. Huge range, powerful voice, could set a stadium alight with the perfromance.

Sorted 😉

After thinking it over Drew, Lawford was the really lucky guy to be included in the Rat Pack.

Sinatra fit. If you didn't agree, he had contacts that would convince you that it's best to agree.

Sammy Davis competed with Martin as the prime talent in that unforgettable bunch. Close call.

There were five ... Martin, Sinatra, Lawford, Davis...

was Joey Bishop the fifth ???

whatever, Elvis Presley wins.

Freddie Mercury ?

Know the name, but no face or voice comes to mind.

Drew

Have you seen those auditions? OMG, it inspires me to go up and give it a try

You and me have clashed before on Stevie Wonder, Ice.

Stevie couldn't carry a tune in a plastic shopping bag.

Uh we have??? I dont remember arguing about stevie. Wonder puts Johnny Cash to shame 😛

Neil Diamond ... right on Giant, major talent, major talent.

Wrote them AND sang them I think. Great stuff.

One of his pieces rebounds inside my skull as I type, something about 'Lady, can't place it. I've got the tune bouncing around in that big hollow spot between my ears but I can't put any words to it.

However, the 'KING' (Elvis) preceeded Neil and still rules.

Hmmmm.. maybe it was Drew... hard to tell you guys apart sometimes

Compare any of Stevie's 'stuff' to Cash's 'Ring of Fire' and then tell me again that Wonder puts Cash to shame.

SHEEEZE !!! where have you BEEN ????

We tolerated Stevie, but he had no classics

can't stay silent on this one.....

Now if we're talking about skill and technique my argument is a toss up: Maynard James Keenan from Tool, the man has perfect pitch, amazing range, and uncanny control. Plus he can do a long pissed off controlled scream without blowing his voice out (let's see Britney or Justin try that one). The second one would be Mike Patton whose been in numerous projects (Faith No More being the most well known). He can do all of the above but his pitch isn't quite as good. However, he's alot more experimental so it more then makes up for it.

Hey, all I know is given the choice, I would rather hear "Living for the City" by Stevie Wonder over "Candy Man" by Sammy Davis, Jr. (not to take away anything from Sammy, a huge talent)

Neil Diamond, extemely talented, as well
Freddie Mercury (from Queen, ditto)

And I.....yes I, as in "I don't give a f*ck what anybody else thinks", also put Tom Jones and K.D. Lang on MY list of favorite singers.

Drew

Karen Carpenter
Kenny Rogers
Garth Brooks (not a big country fan, but those two singers deserve recognition in my opinion)
Darren Hayes
Freddie Mercury (I'll echo that one as well)
Dan Folgelburg (oh just bite me! He's a hell of a singer!)

Mimi 🙂

you are correct - joey bishop was a rat packer.

now lets see - i would separate most talented singer from who i may prefer, although they may coincide.

on the talent end:

barry manilow

pavoratti

justin haywood (moody blues)

andy williams

karen carpenter

barbara streisand

bing crosby

art garfunkel

jim morrison

david cassidy (oh yeah, i'm serious; come on get happy)

Sandi Patti
Barbara Streisand
Emmylou Harris
Linda Ronstadt
Roy Orbison
Elvis Presley
The Judds(especially Wynonna)
Martina McBride
Judy Garland
Brian Wilson(The Beach Boys)
Clay Aiken
Etta James
Faith Hill
Karen Carpenter
Patsy Cline(my personal idol)
Patty Loveless

I like Johnny Cash, but not for "I walk the line". Remember "A Boy Named Sue?" Loved that song.

Others who I think are great singers:

Karen Carpenter (what a tragic waste)
Freddie Mercury (another unfortunate tragedy)
Stevie Wonder (is a pattern emerging?🙂 )Who said he had no classics??
Luther Vandross
Sandi Patti
Barbara Streisand (without the diva'isms)
Tamyra Gray (the one who should've won AmerIdol 1)
-Reuben and Clay (up and coming talent too good for american idol but never would've gotten a contract because of thier appeareance. Good luck to them both.
Yolanda Adams
Vickie Winans
Robert Palmer (RIP)

So many more singers--so little time😛

My list...

Jeff Buckley (some women can't even sing that high)
James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers)
Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
Nina Simone
Stevie Wonder (sorry pervert, you're the minority)
Curtis Mayfield
Aretha Franklin

...and of course I'd mention Elvis too.

wow gripped I was amazed no one mentioned Aretha Franklin before you...one hell of a talent!!

Aretha Franklin
Freddie Mecury
Neil Diamond
Linda Rondstat
Aaron Neville (love his voice)
Barry White (another I love his stuff!)

Enrico Caruso
Fritz Wunderlich
Ella Fitzgerald
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Joe Williams
Farinelli
Sinatra
Nina Simone
Placido Domingo
Byrn Terfel

Not all exactly my favorite singers but that crop is chocked full of TALENT. Clay Aiken my foot😛

In terms of overall music ability, nobody has Paul MacCartney on their list?
😕 😕 😕
