hmmm... what movies shouldnt be remade? how bout all of em?
The reason it happens is because people today lack talent. Because of the lack of talent, they can't come up with new ideas so they steal an old one and pretend to have a noble cause of remaking it.
Echo what Steph said.
More responses to Isabeau's query follow.
Movies that should NOT HAVE BEEN remade
"Charade" (1963)--unfortunately remade about 2003 as "The Truth about Charlie," which was less than okay. "Charade" with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (along with George Kennedy, Walther Matthau, and James Coburn, among others) was and is fantastic.
"The Bishop's Wife" (1947), Cary Grant, David Niven, Loretta Young. Remade in the '80s or '90s with Whitney Houston. OK remake BUT nothing compared to the cast, humor, and general feeling of "anything is possible" provided by the original.
Movies that should NEVER be remade
"Gone With The Wind" (1939)-Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and Olivia de Havilland as principal cast. NO ONE can beat the perfection of the principal cast or the casting for the other roles, Max Steiner's original score (as well as music by other contributers), the adaptation, the entire package Selznick achieved...LEAVE ALONE.
Agree with DannyMc about "Casablanca" (1942) and "Sound of Music" (1965).
"Gigi" (1958)--Louis Jourdan, Leslie Caron, and Maurice Chevalier--perfect casting; WHO could play Chevalier's role with the same effect?
"My Fair Lady" (1964)--Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn (should have left her voice for the singing!)--again, can't beat the cast or other aspects of the film.
"Holiday Inn" (1942)--Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Both irreplaceable.
NO movie in which Fred Astaire and/or Gene Kelly dance.
"Working Girl" (1988)--which was nominated for several awards, including several Oscars (Carly Simon took one home for "Let the River Run"). Heard Jessica Simpson or somebody wanted to remake. Bad idea.
Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy--Leave it alone folks. Can't improve on perfection.
All the current Harry Potter films (and hopefully, if cast remains consistent) those for the remaining books--Terrific casting, writing, visuals, music. Leave it alone. Ditto for George Lucas' "Star Wars" films, unless he himself chooses to go back and tweak again, and Spielburg's "Raider's" trilogy.
Songs
Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" --No one sings it like Bing Crosby so I wish they'd stop screwing with it.
Virtually everything done by David Bowie. Leave 'em alone.
I can probably think of tons of other movies, and given time, songs, but anyone reading this is most likely thinking, "when is she going to shut up?" So, I will.
