I was wondering what music festivals you have in America. I was watching a documentary about Woodstock and was surprised to learn that this is not an annual event. In the UK we have glastonbury annually, the Reading and Leeds Festivals, the V festival in staffordshire and chelmsford and many many more every summer across the country featuring the top bands of the day. I'm not talking about jazz music, folk music, country music or rubbish like that, but rather weekend festivals playing rock music, indie music and similar genres. I searched google but couldn't find much. I'm sure you must have loads of music festivals but which are the best???

Also, could anyone from New York comment on the music seen. With The Kllers, The Bravery, The Scissor Sisters (all from New York i think?) and more you guys must have some awesome music festivals planned this year?

Note, i'm sure jazz, folk and country music is good but its hardly edgy or cool, so that's why i call it rubbish. I love classical music but its not cool either.

We have Rockfest and Ozzfest every year here in Wisconsin.

Ozzfest is the bigger of the two. It's lead by Ozzy Osborne (obviously), and really draws some amazing talent to it's two stages. They tour the country having multiple shows from coast to coast. This year the lineup includes:

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Rob Zombie
Killswitch Engage
As I Lay Dying
Shadows Fall
Mastodon
Black Label Society
A Dozen Furies
The Haunted
In Flames
Arch Enemy
The Black Dahlia Murder
Bury Your Dead
It Dies Today
Soilwork
Trivium

They should have big screens showing slasher flicks in the background...lol. It's a must see if you're a real metal head, though...especially if you're a fan of up and coming indie rock bands.

I'm going to a couple of festival's this summer and am looking forward to seee

Scissor Sisters
Oasis
Franz Ferdinand
The Bravery
Doves
Kaiser Chiefs
Maroon 5
Zutons
Jet
Embrace
Athlete
Prodigy
Texas
The Music
Thirteen Senses
Chemical Brothers
Ian Brown (formerly of stone roses i think)
22 20'S
Goldfrapp
Robert Plant

at the V festival and

REM
Idlewild
Razorlight
Snow Patrol
Roxy Music
Morrissey
Embrace

at the Isle of Wight Festival

Some of these bands are truly awesome, whilst others have a less exceptional repertoire, which nevertheless includes at least three or four decent songs. Rock on!!!!
If you like Scissor sisters, Bravery and Killers, then i reccomment you try the Kaiser chiefs, kasabian and Franz ferdinand. The zutons are decent too.

Well.....where do i start?

......dear oh dear. I have news for you, you Geordy toss pot.

What is cool about washed up has beens like Oasis, Robert Plant and Doves? I think your choices are bad, AND neither "edgy or cool"

Miles Davis wrote the book on cool while your dad was still wetting his nappies.

I am probably by myself on this one UNI, most Americans dont agree with me either, most of em dont know their "Seven steps to heaven" from their "Heaven Seventeen".

I still have a lot of work to do on this web site.

Big Miles fan here, Red. Just picked "Miles in Europe" and "Miles in Tokyo" on cd. These were from the "Seven Steps" era. (my finances wouldn't allow me to pick up the actual "Seven Steps" box set)

Is there still a vans Warped tour? Theres a weeklong Creation Festival, for Christian Bands (Rebecca St. James and the like, not Slipknot)

Newcastle, are you talking about THE Robert Plant of Led Zepplin fame? Being a huge fan it would be nice to know that after all these years he is still rocking!

As far as i know it is THE very same Robert Plant. As for calling me a geordie toss pot! I resent that. I am not originally from nmewcastle and i'd thank you if you refer to me as a smoggy tosspot in the future!

Most people don't like oasis. They think the band is arrogant. I personally think Oasis rock! I cannot think of too many better albums than definitely maybe and what's the story morning glory. Some great bands will be at that festival. I don't know if you've heard much of Franz Ferdinand, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Zutons, Jet et al but these bands are awesome. Granted, they will probably disappear into obscurity within the next few years, but at the moment they rock. As for teh Dives, i don;t pretend that they are cool. But they have some great songs and collectively with the other artists this festival will be awesome.

And how can you not like REM, Morrissey and a quintessential 80's band reforming called Roxy Music.

And these aren't the biggest festivals. I don't think the Glastonbury lineup has been announced yet. but you be be assured that it will have some massive names.
As for Miles writing the book on cool. Yeah, probably very cool, but Jazz music is about as euphoric and uplifting as being told you have three months left to live. It CAN be cool if you like contemplating sicide whilst dwelling on the essentially meaningless nature of existence

Let him at it, Uni. He's just an ignorant old fart who never has anything good or tickle-related to say. No offense, red.

I myself had never been to a particularly large festival, but I'd sure love to go. To get the vibe off the main stages would be great, and I'm always partial to acoustic music myself, so I can relax there.

There is nothing better than a live concert. For me its a huge rush and one of my absolute favorite things to do. Having been to many of them, it doesn't matter what the spectrum of music, its all so much sweeter when you see it done live. I didnt realize that Roxy Music was still around either. Sounds like a really great time.

Dont mind me guys!!!........

....I give it out, I expect to take it, no problem.

OK uni...."smoggy toss pot" works just as well for me. I am curious to know wich albums and artists give you this view of Jazz. Most people come out with statements similar to yours, but when you question them, in turns out they have do idea what they are talking about. I cant believe for a moment you fall in to that catergory!

What most people REALLY mean when they slag off jazz is "I dont know what I am listening to, I dont understand it, therefore it must be crap"...wich is of course bollocks. No one applies such a crass philosophy to literature. If you cant get to grips with "Finnigans Wake", "Waiting for Godot" or "To the light house" most folks will assume its good, and its THEY who need to take some time to understand it.

Jazz DOES need to be listened to in a different way,and some knowledge of its history also helps.

I must say I dispair at the state of most peoples narrow musical understanding these days, unless it involves someone playing a guitar badly and shouting "oooh baby I love you yeah yeah yeah" no one wants to know.

Also, being able to play an instument well has been deeply unfashionable since the advent of punk in 1977. Just think if we picked our dentist because he did his job with "passion, heart and feeling" and not becuase he knows what he is doing with a drill.

Blimey Gripped!!!.....

....did you just call me an ignorant old fart?....dear oh dear...so much work to do, so little time.

Bird Lives!!

Sorry Drew.........

....I knew you " had the faith" and dont forget I said MOST Americans, not all.

Hey red, if you ever record that song let me know. It sounds like you have the formula for a winner!

But actually that statement pretty much sums up every great song from the Beatles, Clapton, Queen, Nirvana, Oasis, Guns and roses, QOTSA, Red hot chilli peppers and others...

You are spot on though when you say I probably have no idea what i'm talking about - because I don't. I don't understand jazz. I've never made time to understand jazz. I am vaguely aware that it is immensely cool, soulful and often sad and introspective but thats about it. But i'm gonna check out that Miles Davis fellow you mentioned. I'll let you know what i think.

Well Done Smoggy..............

......another soul converted on the road to Damascus.

Just thought I'd share the information that one of the world;s greatest musical festivals is about to start. April 22-May 1.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Hundreds of musicians. Days and days of raw emotional talent. Yeah....good stuff.

Jo, chillin' with Bill Evans at the moment

Damn.....that sounds like an awesome fest, Joby. Whose playing it? I couldn't get any info on the site. Although maybe I don't wanna know as they're probably some favorites of mine.

Drew.........listening to Lee "Scratch" Perry

I remember the US Festival 83 Heavy Metal Day. It was in Death Valley with like a million people. They had to have water cannons to spray the people down to keep em cool. Onto the bands.

Van Halen
Scorpions
Triumph
Judas Priest
Ozzy Osbourne
Motley Crue
Quiet Riot

Those were the early days of Heavy Metal about 1 or 2 years away from Slayer, Venom and Exodus although they had albums out at the time they didnt hit until around 84. :devil2:
