I don’t think I’ve processed this yet — as silly as that might sound.
Tony Iommi perhaps summed it up best when he said “there’ll never be another Ozzy”, and how could there be? From Sabbath to solo stardom, the ups, the downs, the drugs and debauchery, his story was unique and it’ll never be repeated.
I had a ticket to see Ozzy live in concert at Newcastle in 2003 (my fourteenth birthday, as it happens), and it was cancelled after he suffered medical problems. I remember feeling disappointed at the time but my love for the Double O grew over time and his music still means an incredible amount to me.
He lived one hell of a turbulent life, but just like Lemmy, you always hoped he’d beat the hell out of death. As it is, we’ve got a stunning collection of music to sustain us — and that’ll do.
Rest in peace, Ozzy ❤️
