My First Minor League Baseball Game Last Night

Last night, I attended my first ever minor league baseball game, as I saw my hometown Lancaster Barnstormers, who are managed by Tommy Herr, a former major league second baseman for the Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets, during the 1980s, lose to the Atlantic City Surf, by a score of 5-4, at Clipper Magazine Stadium, located not far from my apartment. There was a crowd of nearly 5900 at the game, at a stadium that seats probably 8000. I went to an event sponsored by a local library, where my friend's father is head librarian. It turned out to be a great night. We had overflowing food. (Too much!) Ceremonial first pitches, a few speeches, and then the game. The stadium is beautiful, and I will be attending another game there in late September, with my friend, and others.
Do any forum members attend minor league baseball games? I have been to Spring Training games in Florida in the past, but until last night, had only been to major league games in New York, Atlanta, Philly, and Houston, and never to a minor league game. I think from now on I will try to attend at least one Barnstormers game a year, in addition to the annual game I go to in Philly each year between my Braves and the Phillies. The ticket was only $7 for a good seat, and food, while a bit expensive, was still more affordable then at Citizens Bank Park in Philly. Overall, it was a great time.

Mitch, I have attended a few minor league games over the years. The first two were in St Petersburg, Florida where the Cardinals had a class A team in the Florida State League. And last year I attended a class AAA game in Memphis, which is the Cardinals top minor league team. I agree with you in that its alot of fun, and tickets and concessions are much cheaper.

The ticket itself cost me $15, but part of that was a special buffet hosted by the Lion's Club, which my friend's father is a member of. I am going to another game in Sept, and that ticket will cost me $7. For concessions, most main items cost $3 each, so my finding was that concessions were a bit cheaper, but not much. I spent $3 on a bottle of Diet Pepsi, and another $3 on a regular ice cream cone. The real test is going to be when I go to the next game there, and will be eating dinner. I'll probably order two or three pieces of pizza, and a Diet soda, and we'll see how much that comes to.
Overall, it was a good experience.

I attend 6 or 7 games a year of the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class A affiliate of the Mets) in Keyspan Park, Coney Island, Brooklyn.

The atmosphere is friendly and pleasant. They have a larger-than-life bronze statue of Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson just outside the entrance. They also have the Brooklyn Baseball Gallery, a museum of baseball in Brooklyn with lots of Dodger memorabilia.

All in all, a fine place to go. 😀
