I've thought about this for awhile, as this could be pretty close. Both defenses are fantastic. But even though I'd be pretty happy for the Eagles if they win (and I really would, I like Philly), they'd only win if they really deserved it and played the game of thier season.
I was at first resistant to the idea of the New England Patriots winning three out of four Super Bowls. I guess we've all started to get used to league parity and the underdogs making noise. However, the more I think about it, the more I think that the NFL needs to have the first parity-era dynasty. First, they said it couldn't be done and this would really prove that you can succeed over time in an era of free-agency and salary cap restrictions.
Second, it would prove that coaches do make a difference and that a great coaching staff can have more of an impact on a team than ever thought. I'll tell you that there are more New England fans concerned about losing Romeo Crenell than they were about Ty Law.
And why not like the Patriots? They don't trash-talk, they don't draw much attention off the field...they just keep getting it done through injuries and everything. This is an old-school team with a seeming answer for everything. Not only could the NFL use a dynasty now, I think the fans could, too. At least in twenty years we can talk about "those great Pats teams" like we talk about the legacy of the Steelers or Cowboys or 49ers. It does the sport good to have someone dominate for a little before we go back to the next decade of "two new teams each year". A little something for the history books in a league that has become very streaky.
So, with fate on thier side and an opportunity to cement themselves in the annals of NFL history forever, I can't see the Patriots drop this game. In fact...
...I don't even think this one's going to be as close as the first two. Those great franchises of the past all blew an opponent or two out of the game, and if you count back between the recent close games and the blowouts, you'll see that we're due for a one-sided game. We've been alternating them every year since '95.
So, with all that being said, my pick is...
