My therapist recently texted me that they finally added a new character on Sesame Street that has Autism. Her name is Julie. I think this is a really good thing, especially because most people will realize that Autism affects females because it's not as common.

I give Sesame Street a lot of credit for creating this new character :goodjob:.

I looked this up, and I must say I'm very happy that she's going to be portrayed positively as opposed to problematic or "weird".

I was a little surprised, and then not surprised when I heard, especially when I saw how they were going to handle explaining her symptoms in a more positive way. Especially when they take the effort to have the other characters react how neurotypical kids would react or assume about her too. It IS Sesame Street after all, they've been pretty progressive on portrayals throughout the years.

I must admit, I didn't realise new episodes of Sesame Street were still broadcast.

I'd like to have watched it more as a child, I don't know why it didn't, but as an adult I've always supported the message and liked the characters.

Anything involving Jim Henson is always striking.

Kudos to Sesame Street, that's great. And like DemiTickler said, they've always seemed pretty good about that kind of stuff, so it's not that surprising. I hope people are receptive to the character.
