New head coach for Chargers

Turner was really the only safe choice available at this point. He`s a fine offensive coach, and should be a great help to Phillip Rivers. The Chargers couldn`t afford to gamble on a college coach, or someone like Mike Singletary who had such limited coaching experience. Now the key will to hire a good defensive coordinator, because Turner doesn`t know squat about defense. Under the circumstances I think this was a good hire. :wiseowl:

Turner is a position coach at best...I give it six games until people are screaming for Marty Ball again.

hahahhahaha

Let's face it, I dont know the subtelties of football and I could not choose a good head coach if my life depended on it, but Turner's overall record and his being fired by the Raiders make me feel a bit insecure about it all.

But thanks for your positive thoughts, Uncle.

Let me explain why I am positive about this. Norv Turners head coaching record is not good, but you need to be objective if you label him as a bad coach. The two teams he was with, Oakland and Washington have owners who are widely considered to be among the most incompetent in the NFL. He never had a chance with Al Davis and Daniel Snyder calling the shots for him with player decisions. In my opinion Turner will fit in brilliantly with the Chargers offense. Nothing needs to be changed or even tweaked. My concerns are on defense. He needs to bring in a top notch assistant to run the defense, and stop the foolish penalties from occouring in key situations. They showed a real lack of discipline in the New England playoff game. As I have said many times, how many coaches take over a team that finished the season with a 14-2 record?? The Chargers are a young team and will be a force in the AFC next season. And bellystrokes is pretty, so I root for them. 😛

and the Chargers are pretty too, so I will root for them. Seriously, thanks for insightful comments. TF4F did an excellent job explaining the blow by blow steps the Chargers did in losing that game (not trying to insult you NE fans, so dont send hate mail, please) and some "wisdom" and experience seems to be needed.

oh YAY....I guess now its time to do cartwheels and flips now 🙄

btw...Chargers suck :imouttahe

I personally would have liked to see Singletary, but Turner has the most NFL experience of any of the other candidates. It was interesting what Bill said about his last two teams. He was working for Al Davis and Dan Snyder. If you are working for those two, you are automatically labeled a sitting duck. You couldn't pay me enough money to work under those guys.

It was a safe choice based on experience.

i think they should have gone with rex ryan. it was clear before the playoffs started and against new england the team got a little cocky and wasn't very disciplined. i don't see norv turner correcting this problem at all. also though the defense has star power as an overall unit it was just above average last year so i think a defensive minded coach was the way to go.

My misery could use a little company....

the Chargers releasing a 14-2 coach like Marty, for ANYBODY else, tells me that my own idiot team owner, Al Davis, is obviously not the only idiot owner in the league.....

Im no big Marty fan, but the chargers players loved him, and he had pretty good success....and anybody who blames that charger playoff loss on the coach should really go back and look at that game again...Marty wasnt the one dropping all those passes on the field.....

you would think that from a strictly business standpoint, they would have kept Marty as Coach....the fact that the owner put petty, personal issues ahead of the welfare of the team tells me that you cant put a price on stupidity, but I think the chargers are going to pay for this pretty stupid decision.....

Hey NT, just read the small print. That is ok, I am patient, but he gods will get you. heheeh

I don't want to agree that they got cocky, but they did need some reigning in and some focusing skills. I was surprised that the defense wasn't a bigger factor in selecting the new coach.

Nothing wrong with there defence (Similar to the Bengals two years back) its built to defend a lead; ie pass rush. When you got a player that scores 21 points on his own not many teams are going to try and run the ball on you so all you want your defence to do is bend not break and pin their ears back and create pressure on the QB - something they did quite well.

I feel the offence is a slight concern for SD, other then Tomilson they are not generating much in any other position. Gates gets credit but he is getting it by what he did in the past - Kellen Winslow Jr out played him this year but you dont hear about that, who are their wide recievers?? I think an offensive minded coach with a different different schemes might pay dividends.

Norv Turner is an okay hire, but like others have mentioned, getting the opportunity to work with a team that is championship ready. The Chargers will be okay.

it sucks because now the 49ers lost the reason why the offense was decent last year. damn, now Mike Nolan has to figure out how to keep Alex Smith from looking like a bust. I guess they better keep handing off the Frank Gore.

The Chargers will win the AFC West. if they dont, Turner is already in trouble.

I don't think Turner was a bad hire, but I don't think he is the best fit for what the management objective was.

Can anybody tell me the last time Turner won a Super Bowl?

I also think for the Chargers to be a more complete team, they need to focus a little on defense. This is where I thought Singletary would have been a perfect fit. I remember him as the leader of probably the best, and most intimidating defense you will ever see. Part of being a good defense is the psychological aspect where if you are an offensive player, you know that if touch the ball, you are going to get the living shit beat out of you. When I played football, there were schools that we played where I was more reluctant to get the ball than others, although I never said anything to change our game plan. You suck it up, but it's a psycholgical albatross that is you have to deal with before you even walk out onto the field. Singletary has Shawne Merriman to build that kind of defense around.

I think their offense is good but a little one dimensional with LT.
