To any Star Wars fans or just fans of good sci-fi, I've recommended a sereis recently to a few friends, and thought I'd just go ahead and post it.
For those of you not reading it, it is called the New Jedi Order series. Forget everything you think you know about Star Wars, this takes off in a completely new direction.
It takes place 25 years or so after Return of the Jedi. It deals with an invasion from outside the Galaxy by a species known as the Yuuzhan Vong. They utterly abhor mechanical technology, as their weapons, clothing and even the very ships they fly are all living creatures, "shaped" by the masters of their genetic manipulation caste. And the fearsome members of the Warrior caste are more than a match for many of the newer Jedi.
These creatures are not only bent on the total destruction of the Galaxy to reshape for their own use, but comlpetely devoid of any presence in the Force.
This series goes beyond regular sci-fi, and delves deeply into politics, romance, religion, and the break down of the main character's "safety bubble". Main characters are dying in this one, and the bad guys are winning more often than not.
The struggle within the Jedi Order is strained by the growing number wanting to attack, and the old-school Jedi calling for restraint and reaction. The Republic government has washed its hands of the Order, and a faction called the Peace Brigade searches the Galaxy, attacking Jedi to turn over to the invading aliens in a misguided push for peace, facing the struggling Order with a new Purge.
The aliens themselves tell the government that they will cease their invasion if the Jedi are turned over, which is total BS, but a frightened Republic starts to cry for their heads.
There is a lot of intrigue surrounding Han and Leia's sons, both Jedi Knights, but approaching things from far different perspectives.
What is very entertaining about this series is the coming together of friends and foes to defeat a common enemy. The Republic, The Old Empire, The Chiss, The Hapans and even the Hutts are thrown into the pot together.
All in all, I'd highly recommend this series.
The books:
Vector Prime (R.A.Salvatore)
Dark Tide I - Onslaught (Michael Stackpole)
Dark Tide II - Ruin
Agents of Chaos I - Hero's Trial (James Luceno)
Agents of Chaos II - Jedi Eclipse
Balance Point (currently hardcover only) (Kathy Tyers)
Edge of Victory I - Conquest (Greg Keyes)
Edge of Victory II - Rebirth
Star by Star (hardcover) (Troy Denning)
There will be more, so keep your eyes open.
