Oh boy....where to begin?
The Wrath of Khan is NOT the only Trek film to follow from events from an episode. Star Trek: First Contact featured the Borg as the villains and they were from several episodes of The Next Generation! Not to mention the Borg and the Borg Queen went on to be in a few episodes of Star Trek: Voyager afterwards. That's a LOT of "direct episode" stuff there.
I don't want to see this new movie at all. Nobody mentioned Space Hippies.
Just for you Dussicar 😀

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!!!!![]()
I loved Zoe Saldana![]()
I don't think it is fair to run down Eric Banna's performance as the villian either. It is the directors job to guide the actor through the production of the film. If you didn't like what Banna did then you have only J.J. Abrams to blame.
I had thought this thread was dead, but this is worth replying to.
Any actor who would blame the director for his/her poor performance is not worth shit. As an actor, I can assure you that while the director does have an important hand in the process, the performance is ultimately YOUR responsibility, not theirs, and you don't deserve to be there if you feel you need to blame the other cast and crew members for your shortcomings.
As a longstanding fan of Star Trek, I had to give this movie huge kudos. Unfortunately, for many the original Star Trek WAS broken. Even when it first came out it struggled to avoid cancellation for every season it got. It corny, had cheesy graphics even for the time, and at times could even be embarrassing to watch. Yet, the idea itself for the show was amazing. That was the idea behind creating this movie- they wanted to make a movie that people beyond just the core trekies would enjoy using the amazing backstory and plot that had been laid out before them.
And it succeeded. The number of Trek fans has increased many many fold due to this movie.

The girl who plays Uhura certainly kicks ass! She can beam me up any day!!![]()
I can't think of a viable excuse for Uhura or Spock, but Kirk was supposed to be a different character. The primary difference being that in the first series his dad was alive and well to teach him moral values and all that other fun stuff. In this one his dad kicked it the moment he was born.
