(C) Paramount Home Entertainment Movie News: STAR TREK 11 IS GREENLIGHT WITH J.J. ABRAMS TAKING COMMAND
Hooray for Paramount for giving the reigns to their most precious franchise to someone who will actually bring it back to life

LOCATION: The Final Frontier

THE SKINNY: In a scenario STAR TREK fans have been screaming for since the debacle of the VOYAGER TV show and the missed potential of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, the Paramount franchise has been reinvigorated with new blood ... and blood that does not include Rick Berman who sheparded the the franchise back to life with THE NEXT GENERATION.

Instead, the Next Generation is ALIAS/LOST creator J.J. Abrams. Hot off his duties helming MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, Paramount has tapped him to direct an 11th STAR TREK film to be released in 2008.

Taking a cue from the STAR WARS films, this will be a prequel to the original TREK series (but taking place way after ENTERPRISE), focusing on the young adventures of Captain James T. Kirk at Starfleet Academy and his first mission with Mr. Spock.

The script will be penned by Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

This isn't the first time the Starfleet Academy idea has been floating around. Berman was developing a movie with that concept several years before, until it was abandoned for the abysmal STAR TREK: NEMESIS.

The difference -- with Abrams on board, the studio will likely give him carte blanche to eradicate all the technical babble and clinical emptiness of the later TREK series (and movies) and go back to what made the original STAR TREK series so great -- human stories about strong, relatable characters. And besides, we can't wait to see the dream cast of young-uns taking on the roles made famous by Wiliam Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, etc.

Thank you Paramount. You finally got one right when it came to the TREK franchise. May your opening weekend live long and prosper.

I find your lack of faith distuuuuuurbing.... :shake: Star Wars rocks! :ranty: But I must say, I don't mind the original Star Trek cast/series... the Next Generation stuff did nothing for me.

This is great news!!

I never saw any need for the Star Trek / Star Wars rivalry. I think they are both kick ass. I can't realistically compare them because of their stark (pun definitely intended 😀 ) differences. Star Wars is only six very carefully scripted movies that occured over a long period of time, basically telling one story. With Star Trek, you've got 5 long running television series, and 10 movies. While there are some great stories there, there are some really bad ones as well.

I'm curious as to what the variety.com article meant when it mentioned "The Voyager debacle." Are they saying the series was mishandled altogether? The term "debacle" seems to indicate something more specific, such as a breach of Trek protocol.

a debacale....

Didnt Voyager run for 7 yrs like most of the others ( except TOC and Enterprise. ) as long as berman is gone... this could be good. Bring in Manny Coto for reference and consider doing a Enterprise movie.... Too many yrs have past for a Voyager or DS9 movie

I agree that Star Trek Nemesis was "abysmal." After I watched it, I thought to myself, "That's it. They've tapped out all potential. The Star Trek well of interesting and thought provoking plot scenarios has done dried up for good."

Personally I'd always hoped for a Next Generation movie based on a late first-season episode called "Conspiracy." That's the one where Admiral Quinn and other Star Fleet brass are taken over by these alien parasites. They really should have done a lot more with that concept.

The X-Files later used a variation of this theme in the last couple of seasons with alien "super soldiers" replacing humans.

must....find....out....if ....Shatner....is.....in....new....Star....Trek.........................movie!!!!

I believe Brent Spiner is in the movie, but have I doubt Shatner is if they are basing it on his first mission with Spock...

I have never understood why it would be a rivalry either. I love both of them. I personally think that this would help the Star Trek fans get the old style stories back they love. I don't like how they went for so much action. I will say this, this movie will destry some of the books written.

Very amusing that they get to use new young actors and don't have to pay a fortune to Shatner and Nimoy. 😛

They tried this idea once before when a Trekkie Millionare was willing to fund a brand new Trek movie. It fell through then due to Trekkie pressure, it'll fall through now.

The first thing I thought of when I saw Nemesis was "Yeah, I remember this movie, and it was pretty damn good, WHEN THEY CALLED IT WRATH OF KAHN!"

As for the new movie, uh, I don't know the Trek canon that well, but I do remember, Spock served under Cpt. Pike, on the Enterprise, and hadn't met Kirk until Kirk became his new captain.

So, they're tossing aside all that continuity? Yet again?

I actually didnt mind nemesis, it added a new enemy and new twists. Sadly though i think the trek genre has run its course.

The biggest problem with Nemesis is Brent Spiner is the one who wrote it and while the guy's a wonderful actor, he comes off as having a HUGE ego. Handled by someone else it probably would've come off a lot better. Plus be better balanced. The movie seemed to be just about Picard & Data.

What they need to do is go back to the notes Roddenberry left behind. (From the sound of it from this movie though, they're doing just that and simply removing DeForrest Kelly's parts because as I said before - they tried this idea once before, Roddenberry even had a script written - but it fell through then and probably will now.) What they need to do is get his notes for Assignment Earth, which was suppose to be the very first Trek spin-off. Using Greg Cox's Eugenics War books as the blue print and calling it Star Trek: Assignment Earth, they can justify having all sorts of guest stars. According to the books Gary Seven knew Guinan, so there's Whoopi. Anyone with a human ancestory can play their main character's ancestor on the show. Q and Sisko can both show up any time they please. And Seven has a time machine....

Oh - and the aliens have spoke -

Now we better get Paramount to give into their demands.

Hiya! :bunny:

Uhm,, i didn't hate Nemesis either :xpeepsofa - afterall you had sexy Picard's heart and mind with sexy younger Picard's clone body,,,
Every girl loves a 2-for-1 deal! 😛

Seriously though i enjoyed it even if as some say, it was a rip off of "Space Seed" Part II. :jester: :jester:

Uhm, like many have said, I loved StarWars series: Han & Luke & young ObiWan & QuiGon... The Star Wars series was strong on hot guys and way-cute muppet creatures!! It could not go wrong!! 😀
(Here's a question,, If three stories is a trilogy what's six? - a sex-tology? :wow::jester: )

But either way you look at it, we can look forward to revisiting the universe of the Federation again in a couple of years! woohoo!!:veryhappy

Many blessings,
Chickles:redheart:

Now as you might have guessed, I'm obsessed with money. Imagine my horror when Captain Picard tells Ralph Offenhouse that there is no monetary wealth in the 24th century. 😱

But then if that's true, why are the Ferengi so interested in gold pressed latinum?? :blaugh: :jester:

Cause the "no money" thing only applies to the Federation. And even then it's not entirely true. Everyone has Federation credits with which to buy stuff. (How many times did Quark say he wouldn't take Credits?) But non-Federation people still use physical money.

I look at Star Trek is sort of the grandaddy of Sci Fi TV. My dad still has his collection of 3rd and 4th generation copies of the show in Beta format no less!

Coming from a Trekkie... all I can say is... considering that the original series lasted only 3 seasons... it's still going strong in syndication 40 years later. Ya'll can scoff if ya want, but I don't see that kind of success with any other TV show.
Not only did it create 4 other spinoff series (The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager and Enterprise) but even after 10 movies, they are STILL making more.
I, for one, am looking forward to seeing this one just as much as I looked forward to seeing the others. I don't even care if it's a flop... it's a Trek movie... that's all I need to know.

I, too, will still go see it, bomb or success.

But still....I really think they should put the toys back in the attic for a decade.

Remember the thrill when Star Trek: The Motion Picture was announced? Put the ST stuff in storage for awhile, and let the public get hungry again.

I am one of the biggest Star Trek fans there is.........Having said that I know that we all owe Star Wars a debt of gratitude.....

Science fiction as a Genre was relatively dead until in 1977 the release of the first Star Wars movie showed the studios that the science fiction fan base was starved for new material.....2 years later The Motion Picture was released and the rest is second history for all Star Trek fans, so hats off to the original Star Wars and the 2 that followed. My problem was that Star Wars went on from there and to me was not interesting or well acted from that point.....

Lucas originally promissed 9 parts and we were all expecting them to be like the first with massive space battles and adventure all the way through....what realy happened with the last 3 pictures was a let down to me.....

Not that Trek didnt have it's share of let downs, but the original was not very well acted either nor did we come to expect them to be....

I have to go with the world of Trek over the world of the rebels any day I am afraid....

Havent even watched the last Star wars all the way through.....Kinda like Harry Potter in that respect.....

BUT...I am still greatful to Lucas as the interest generated by his vision has kept Sci fi alive since the late 70's.... :couch:

That's a funny link but I think it's a little harsher on Rick Berman than he deserves. Yeah, the last two movies weren't very good, but there were at least 6 great seasons of Next Generation and two movies for which we can thank him.

What is gonna be real interesting about this up and coming movie is that Spock was already a member of Star Fleet and was under the command of Captain Pike before Kirk took over the Enterprise.
So... how are they gonna meet at the acadamy???
