While I was in the forums today, I found a thread started by Knox. He mentioned Googling names. Said his nephew Googled his... then Knox Googled his own, then did that of a friend.
Well that got me curious. I Googled my name. I found out there are a hell of a lot of women out there with my name. I kept my married name after the divorce because as a woman, our last names are subject to change so I never saw the necessity of changing it back to my maiden one (funny now that I think about it... I guess I actually expected to marry again sometime in my life).
Anyway... I tried the Googling once more but this time I used my maiden name. At the top of the page I see my family geneology. Now, the interesting thing about my maiden name is that it is made up.
My great grandpa came over from Spain and when he hit North America... he changed the last name to something so far from the original name it's not funny... but the way he did it... well... it actually has significance. No other family has that last name. Until my great grandpa... it didn't exist. So... anyone with that surname... is a relative.
Anyway...
I clicked on the link...
A few lines down the page I see a link that actually mentions my name along with two others. This man is trying to find these 3 people and one of them has my name. I'm thinking... "Oh Wow, that's cool... that can't possibly be me... so there must be two of us."
I clicked on it.
The man who posted the thread introduces himself... then says who his mother was... and where his grandparents lived... and started listing his relatives... my dad's name was right there at the top... under his was a list of the majority of my aunts and uncles... my mouth hit the floor. This man is my first cousin!
He mentions how we were a large family separated by our parents. He said he still lived in Michigan. And he invited response through emails.
Well... it didn't take me long to send off an email. Unfortunately... it came back as undeliverable.
So... once again... I used Google to look up his name... it gave me two phone numbers for his name in Michigan. My next step will be to call those two numbers.
I'm hoping this goes well. I lost all touch with my dad's family after my parent's divorce when I was 15. This cousin is the son of one of my older aunts, one quite a few years older than my dad. My parents were married 10 years before they had me so I am expecting this cousin to be considerably older than myself. Maybe by as much as 20 years.
I guess I will find out shortly.
Considering my move back east... it's almost like a fate kind of thing. Like this reunion was meant to be. It's certainly happening at the most fortunate of times. It will be exciting to meet a first cousin that I may or may not ever have known. Contact between my parents and my father's family was sparce and there is a very good chance that I have never met this man.
Wish me luck in contacting him!
