Hi All! I thought I would share what I just heard on the news. It was about this couple a few town over from me that were paying off everyone layaways at Wal-Mart. That's not the part that made me mad, it's something they said. They are not paying out anything to have to do with game, movies, TV. Saying “people can't use their imagination with games or TV”.

Clearly, they never heard of games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, Minecraft, ETC. Games where you get to build stuff or make a character.

Like me, for people that read my last post, you know I was playing as a male Giant, I have since started over as a female Aasimir Mage. I spent a good hour making her in the character builder. [her name, BTW, is Lilith Lovelace]

I would upload a pic of her, but, as of a few months ago, I don't have a camera

I think theres a point to it though. Reading causes you to fill in blanks that arent there visually, while video games and tv give you visual information and thus you, usually, dont have to think as hard lol

Video games have been proven to help you make decisions faster and think better

Somebody dropped $46K to pay off people's Christmas layaways.
If they had other stuff on layway, that freed up money for games, etc.
It's a good thing.

Not to be an asshole, but is this something worth being upset about? Someone was doing something nice for other people but had specific things that they wanted to contribute to. It's like donating to one charity and not the others, at some point the fact that they're doing it at all makes the reasons irrelevant.

On the point that you're particularly upset with, I have to agree with Chicago on this one. Even as someone who adores those mediums, there isn't the traditional sense of "imagination" involved with video games, movies or TV. Sure you can create and make up your own things with video games but it's based on the foundations and system constructed by someone else. Perhaps the imagination these people value is the ability to define your own bounds and realities or the ability to develop your own visual experience?

Yeah for sure, i just couldnt find any actual studies but im sure theyre out there. I think video games can help with a lot, i was just curious about specifics and "think better" was kind of vague. But thank you for the link and your replies.

I guess mad was the wrong word, but I am of a type that are like "If you are going to give to something, don't slight anyone in the process".

Plus, if you buy a kid a toy, he\she might play with it a year or two. As for me, I still play my old NES/SNES games from time to time.

What is meant by "think better" and where can i find this proof?

I don't know if it really "scientific" or not, but game DO help some people think faster and have better hand-eye reflexes.

and, In some cases, games do make you more creative [the ones I mentioned, Plus any WWE game [the CAWS], even Saints Row, if you play like I do, focusing more on character building than game play.

In fact, once, I was playing Saints Row [I forget which one], and had a whole character mapped out: from style of clothes, to types of vehicle they drove, had it down to two guns they would use.

So, yeah. It depends on how you play the game, but a lot of games you wouldn't think about are creative, and, yes. brain building.

Think better might been the wrong words to use but games are still better than watching t.v all day

Not knowing any of the details, I would bet that that couple was paying off layaways for things that were NEEDED by those people, things like clothing for example. Video games, movies, and TVs aren't basic necessities - they are nice, maybe they can even help one's mind to an extent (I did pretty well through life without ever having access to video games). If that couple decided to help families with the necessities, I say more power to them. I can guarantee those families were downright glad and thankful. They didn't pay for things you liked - well, that's just selfish, and you obviously don't know what it's like to be in NEED of something that you have a hard time paying for (I've been there a few times myself).

First off, I do know what it's like to do without. Have to barrow money from the bank almost every month just to pay bills. My whole family [me, included] is practically sinking in debt. Have to fight and penny pinch every month just to get by.

We have been without phone and TV before [two dif times]. Thankfully, we have been able to keep the lights on.

The fridge has been empty [and stayed empty for a few days] more than once.

I have not told anyone on here about it because, well, I think of some of you as friends, and I like to try to keep things light with my friends.

and, To tell the truth, you accusing me of "obviously don't know what it's like to be in NEED" kind of hurts.

They gave out some of the list on the news. Mainly dolls, doll houses, toys like that. I am NOT so shallow that I would have said anything, if in fact, it had have been clothes.

and, I know what they did was a good thing. the world would be a better place if more people were like that.

and, two, I hate to say this, but, I think you missed the part I said about what they said about only getting stuff that sparked imagination. Now, my question to you is: how do clothes spark imagination?
