With each team in the NHL now playing at least one quarter of their regular season games, I think it's time for some of the things that have surprised me since the pre-season...
The Good:
Martin Gerber - Where'd this guy come from? From second string all last season to one of the elite goalies so far this year, Gerber is part of, if not, the main reason why Ottawa is steam-rolling the competition.
Chris Osgood - See above. Replace Ottawa with Detroit.
The Carolina Hurricanes - After winning the Cup and finishing 12th in the East last year, I'm impressed, I must say.
Martin Biron - The Sabres kept the wrong netminder. Biron is why Philly will do some damage this year.
Carey Price - Montreal has two starters now. 😀
Tuukaa Rask - That's what a future Vezina winner plays like. Go Boston!
The Bad:
The New York Rangers - With all the talent they acquired in the off-season, I had them pegged as the next big thing. Instead, they've slumped into their old pattern of two good scorers and little else. Hopefully, Lundquist can still save them.
The Nashville Predators - Not the team I thought they'd be this year.
Mikka Kipprusoff - One of the elite goalies in the league and he's let in the most goals of any netminder. Calgary needs him to play stellar to make the playoffs and he's not.
The Anaheim Ducks - That's not the team that won the Cup last year....
The Ugly:
The Toronto Maple Leafs - I won't say too much hear, but suffice it to say they've got the talent to be better than 27/30 in the league right now.
The Washington Capitals - Lots of young talent on that team and no results to show. Especially after a 3 - 0 start.
The Edmonton Oilers - Although, after trading their captain last season and with the competition in their division, who can really blame them?
Anyways, I'm still calling Ottawa vs. The Rangers in the East and Detroit vs. Colorado in the West with Ottawa taking it all in the final over Colorado. See you at the All-Star break!
