hi I know this may sound stupid or was asked before but what program/software do you artists use to create these fantastic cartoons/mangas??? I wonder this because I really want to start my own drawing after all.
thanks!:greenstar

Most of the artist use new photoshop.
They also download many tutorials, brushes and spend many hours before they make anything.
I can recommend you some tutorials if you are interested.

thanks I indeed appreciate that!
from what I understand isn't photoshop an image editing but not an illustration software???

Photoshop is one of the more popular programs because it can be used for illustration and graphics.

Now, I personally use Painter IX, as that is more specifically for artwork and has features and such that are more for people that are inclined towards art rather than graphical images.

Painter IX isn't as popular as Photoshop, but it gives good competition and many amateurs and professionals alike use either or both programs. I myself use Photoshop for certain things (i.e: applying my manga screentones).

As for tools, I have a wacom intuos 3 tablet. If you don't know what tablets are, here is the official wacom website: http://www.wacom.com/

As you will see and learn, there are different tablets with different sizes, and its a matter of finding one thats ideal for how you'll be using it and in what size of a workspace.

Tablets are great for creating images or artwork in programs like painter and photoshop. Tablets are available for purchase in most electronic retail stores (like Circuit City and Best Buy, for example).

I hope I answered your question to your satisfaction. 🙂

There's also:

For some reason the Inkscape site seems to be down. It's great; designed to be like Adobe Illustrator, you draw with vectors. I don't really understand it.
These three programs are free and open-source.
Although almost everything I've posted has been drawn on paper and scanned, so maybe don't take my word. But I do know my free software...

peteryang, photoshop is mostly used after drawing and inking a drawing, but don't be feared. Using different brushes and a little twisting object you can easily make pics without scaning or previously drawing anything.
I still cant find my tutorial files, but i will post them tomorrow for sure. I also recommend downloading full version from rapidshare or some torrent site.
Bye for now.

wow thanks everyone for the great info...
guess I will start by searching some tutorials then

I use CorelDraw, which is a vector-based program like Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator. (Or Xara, which I haven't tried, but have heard good things about.)

Vector based programs fit the way my mind works. I have troubles when I try to use Photoshop or any other paint/bitmap type program to create drawings. Most other people seem to be the other way around.

Let me add: If you're at all serious, get a tablet. You might be able to manage without one if you find you prefer a vector-type drawing program, but even there a tablet is useful. If you go with a paint/bitmap program, a tablet is a must. A basic Watcom tablet will set you back by ~$100(US), but comes bundled with some basic paint programs (e.g. an older version of Photoshop Elements, plus one or two others.)
