The following video was a press conference with Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State's head coach. A reporter from our state paper wrote about O-state's former starting QB, Bobby Reid. Basically, she suggested that the reason Reid wasn't the QB anymore was because of his attitude, and picked apart some of Reid's actions in the OSU/Troy game (i.e. laughing on the sidelines).

After reading the article, and reading about Carlson (the reporter) defending it, are we too hard on our college players? For god's sake, they're BOYS, not pro-football players, as some ppl (sooner fans) seem to believe. They're shouldn't be expected to execute perfect plays and not show emotion.

Personally, I think Gundy stood up for Reid, just as a coach should. I'm not saying the reporter should be fired, but perhaps an apology is in order.

While I hadn't heard about this particular situation previously, I agree with your assessment. I'm glad the coach defended his charge, although I wish he would have chosen to do so in front of the mics so I wasn't continually raising and lowering the volume on my speakers 😉 . Some sportswriters are probably so wound up in what they do that they fail to differentiate when they're covering professional sports and when they're covering college athletics. I guess this is the risk run considering the popularity and exposure of some college athletics. It kind of reminds me of that scene in the movie Parenthood where a crazy fan is shouting insults and directives at kids in the field during a little league baseball game. Even at a professional level, it's sports we're talking about (and I consider myself a big sports fan)- I kind of want to say to people 'you're taking this way too seriously.'

When Don Imus and his producer made those comments about the Rutger's womens basketball team, I thought they had crossed a line. It wasn't just what they said but whom they said it about it- college athletes. They're not yet at an age, in my opinion, where they should have to put up with that garbage. For professional athletes, athletics is how they make their living and dealing with criticism from the media is part of the territory.

EXACTLY! You totally said what I was thinking. I guess I go too far when I say boys, we'll say young men, but they aren't professionals, they shouldn't have to deal with such harsh criticism from everyone. Some of these ppl who
criticize have never played the game....not sure where they all get their expertise. I know we all have our good natured rivalries and all, but some take it way too far.

Great commentary by Gundy, unfortunately its being mocked at the same level as Dan Hawkings screaming about division 1 football

I heard this clip on the radio today. i love to see the press get hammered! i wish they had shown the reporter who wrote the story. i would have liked to see him get right in her face.

P.S. on a side note, i dont think theres many oklahoma st. fans out there, so this wont be a big story. :xpeepsofa

I pull for Oklahoma University. Ok.State is our cross state rival, but in this case I have to applaud Coach Mike Gundy. He was standing up for his player and I bet you the rest of the team will play a little harder for him now.

My question for Jenni Carlson is, "Just how many downs of organized football has she played? How much has she puked up her guts after two a days in August? I did it in high school. Never made it to college as I got my leg broke.

Truth be told about the Daily Oklahoman Newspaper, they don't care for either school. All they ever want to do is run down the coaches at both schools. The papers credibility is definately in question with me.

OSU fans think the paper is pro OU and We OU fans call it the Daily Pokelahoman. So there is two more points of view.

You're probably right. It got media attention because it's media bashing.

Thanks to all who put in they're input.

Today, Frank Deford, in his radio commentary, mentioned the late longtime sports columnist Red Smith, who discussed the subject of those who'd never played the game: "if that were true, that would mean that only dead people should write obituaries."

You know what? Football is a religion down south. Pure and simple. Sports reporters get as hopped up on all of this as the fans. Doesn't matter which level of football either. I'm not surprised by the reporter's comments, one bit. I would be surprised if she actually apologized. By Coach Gundy reacting the way he did, this means more people are going to buy her paper, and read her column. Jackpot.
