If you guys and gals were shopping at LULU or Chapters or Barnes and Noble or other online book retailers for your children, nieces, nephews, younger sisters and younger brothers, or younger cousins or God-children, out of the options I list in the poll or write your own, which would you buy for them for their birthday or Hanukkah or Christmas or other special occasion that you would buy them a gift?

I would buy a non-illustrated fiction novel for them, just because of the sheer amount of wonderful literature that has been produced over the years that anyone of any age could enjoy.

When I was a youngster, I adored Lord of the Flies and the Chronicles of Narnia series and would like to pass those classics along with others down to a younger generation to cherish. Kids get more out of those novels than adults give them credit for. I certainly did.

Depends on the age of the kid

Also, i would hold off on the non illustrated till older because even tho its nice to urge kids to read at a young age, its a waste to just have the book sit there un used by the kid

Illustrated fiction up to about age 10, non-illustrated fiction for older children.

I agree that it definitely depends on the age of the child. My niece and nephew are 5 1/2 and would be totally bored with unillustrated books yet. They NEED pictures to keep them involved. 😀 They LOVE the pictures to help build the story for them. And, it doesn't hurt when their mom or I make funny voices for the characters. :smilelove

Thanks for the input Sadira. :dogpile: :bowing: 😉 :xpulcy:  :wavingguy :wiseowl: :atom:

I got my first non-illustrated novel for Christmas when I was 6 years old. It was "Farmer Boy" by Laura Ingalls Wilder... The idea of a book with no pictures was such a cool concept to me at the time that I sat down and read it almost immediately. I've liked to read ever since. 😀
