Open ended stories

I always wondered....

What would happen to the victims of open ended fictional stories afterwards.
Do they ever make it home or are they forever not found by their coworkers and tickled by caterpillars, ants or their captors?

I am glad that I am living in real life, not a merciless fictional realm of ticklishness.
