OK, I have been a sports fan, particularly football, all my life. Background: I was raised by two Ohio State University football maniacs, but somehow, I turned out to be a University of Michigan fan. I think John Cooper's coaching ethics ruined OSU for me. I've participated in a plethora of different sports not up to but including rugby, equestrian sports, softball and lacrosse. I've never been able to play football because I have boobies. To the point, this thread is being created so that we the people may bitch about the most hated icon in the sports world: umpires, referees, line judges, chair refs, and so forth. :ranty:

I am sure that I am not the only disgruntled fan in the masses, and I will begin this thread with something that disturbs me the most: NFL referees. These ill thoughts have been triggered by the Monday Night Football game that just ended, Patriots vs Vikings. There were two key plays in this game that were reviewed by the officials as a result of a coach's challenge. A pass was dropped by a tight end in purple in the third quarter. He caught the pass, maintained possession of the ball, was taken down by the corner, the ball was forced out, and rolled out of bounds. At first, the call was that the pass was incomplete. This was insane, considering the receiver took at least 2-3 steps with the ball in his hands before it was forced out.

Obviously, the Vikings coach threw the red flag, and the play was reviewed. Even the announcers watched and insured their audience that the play would be overturned, and the ball would be placed where it had gone out of bounds, giving the Vikings a converted third down to the Patriots 20 yard line. Unfortunately for us, the idiot under the hood decided that the pass was incomplete, forcing the Vikings to go for it on fourth down. They of course failed, and the Patriots take over on downs. :sowrong:

I for one am really sick of these calls being made by 80 year old men who can't even see the hash marks on the field! I have seen some of the worst calls in the past few years on the football field, and I can't believe that these are the people they have making the important calls on the field. Holding calls are made when defenders barely brush their fingers over a jersey!!!!!! :disgust:

Anyways, if you yourself have a rant like mine that involves the incompetence of a black and white striped buffoon, please, let me know that I'm not the only disgruntled sports fan out there. Forget screening for teachers, we need screening for officials!!!!!!!

First of all, thank you for joining the 'The Good Side' in the U-M/Ohio State rivalry, should be a lot of fun in a few weeks...GO BLUE!!

Back to your point, you're correct when it comes to age possibly being a huge factor in the decisions that are made. I didn't see the game tonight, but when an obvious call doesn't get 'justice', then it really makes you wonder. Sounds like that call could've changed the game a little. I think it's true in basketball also, when these 50 year old gray haired refs keep up with 20 somethings on a basketball court, no way can they see everything...

Once again I say....GO BLUE!!! :woot:

I have long held that in order to become an umpire in Major League Baseball, you have to have been, at some time or another, diagnosed with ADHD, and had an ongoing prescription for Ritalin for years. Or, be afflicted with an obstinate form of selective blindness. Both a defiant strain of ignorance and an overt form of stupidity help, as well. The current corps meet the criteria very well.

the NFL refs are really something else  it's making me wonder after nearly 20 years of watching the sport why i still bother to watch it...the game that pissed me off recently was the bills/patriots game (hmmm i sense a pattern here...vikes vs pats/ bills vs pats).....(caps coming up) HOW IN THE BLUE HELL IS IT ROUGHING THE G-DAMNED PASSER WHEN THE STUPID FOOL SITS HIS (nice somewhat) REAR-END ON THE FREAKING FIELD AND TWO DEFENDERS WHO ARE CHASING HIM FALL ONTOP OF HIM....IT'S CALLED MOMENTUM......also WHY ARE OFFICIALS ALLOWED TO CAUSE A DAMN FUMBLE??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrr this new person that took over for tagliabue (who i wasn't fond of to begin with) had better get the refs situation fixed before next season.

You know, the new commissioner is such a non-entity that even I can't remember his name. When the suit you wear is, for the most part, empty, your name is difficult to remember, I suppose.

*cough* *cough* tuck rule...............
