Coming up on December 7th the surprise attack that happened 75 years ago.

The History Channel is running a program on it which deals with the lack of communications at that time.

79 years ago, my father's family fled what was then Nazi Germany for America.

I'm rather glad that they did that.

Considering that you might not have been born if they didn't I'd say that's pretty good that they did that then.

Unfortunately many refugees fleeing Nazi Germany weren't so lucky.

Did your family originally live in one of the major cities of Germany? If so, was it Dresden by any chance?

I don't know why you're talking about the Nazi's, it was the Japanese who attacked. I've studied this extensively. Hitler held a Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden in 1937 and where was the Hindenburg headed when it exploded in flames? The US was chalk full of people of German decent. What country exported eugenics to Germany? The tower on top of the Empire State Building was constructed as a mooring for Nazi blimps. Old Mr."We have nothing to fear but fear itself" needed an excuse to entice the USA into another war which they didn't want, so he stationed destroyers which were about to be decommissioned along with their crew in Pearl Harbor in order to entice the Japanese to attack. The crew believed it was a joke and probably the easiest deployment they had ever had. How could the Japanese return to base with not enough fuel? They couldn't fathom the kamakazi's were planning a one way trip, no idea, the thought never entered their minds that they would be sacrificed. Some moved their wives, families and lovers to Hawaii, and why not, they thought they had it made, all seemed perfect. There would be a national uproar and the USA would enter WWII, they might even get Hawaii during the process. He was a devious old bastard but the war would have been lost without US involvement. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart but it should never have been done that way, he lied to his fellow countrymen.

Many services are being held across the country.

At our state capitol at Harrisburg there were still several living veterans from that day.

While I would not put it past Churchill and FDR to have manipulated events so that America would enter the World War II, well, all things considering, better we won the war after fighting it than lost the war by not entering it at all. Yes innocent people and soldiers died that didn't have too but the final result of WWII could have been much much worse for America.

At that time Japan, Germany, & Italy were taking over countries all around the world. They made a big mistake when they picked on us. :usa:

Many people say war is hell and they are, of course, correct but I shudder to think where we would be in a world where Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan conquered the US and Britain. Fortunately Hitler was a complete and utter disaster for his nation's military and the Empire of Japan suffered from lack of intelligence and lack of radar.

For the record - because it never stops with bullshit conspiracies: FDR had no advance knowledge of Pearl Harbor. He knew they were planning an attack, but they were getting all kinds of locations in the intelligence, and none of them mentioned Pearl Harbor. It's yet another dopey conspiracy theory that floats around for the gullible. He wanted to get into the European war; how does getting attacked by Japan accomplish that? It was Germany who declared war on US four days after Pearl Harbor. Then we declared on Germany, after they declared war on us. See how that works? Yeah, FDR was looking for a way to get us into the war.....but Pearl Harbor was not the way to do it!

To swallow the conspiratorial view, we have to imagine that the enlisted soldiers and sailors who broke the Japanese codes, the chiefs of Army and Navy intelligence, the secretaries of war and the Navy, and the president, all of whom received the decrypts, engaged in a conspiracy of silence that was going to cost the lives of some 2,400 of their fellow Americans and the near destruction of the Pacific Fleet. Difficult to credit. Given the lack of motive and the total absence of hard evidence linking F.D.R. to foreknowledge of the Japanese plan, the conspiracy case collapses.

"At Dawn We Slept" is the definitive book about Pearl Harbor.

Now if you're talking about a politician, a head of state, that didn't tell the truth....an American president who misled the people so that he could lead them into war then you should learn about McKinley ("remember the Maine!"), Wilson (elect me, there will be no war!), Johnson (gulf of tonkin), Nixon (torpedoed johnson's peace plan), and of course, that crackerjack W. Bush (anyone still clinging to the idea the world is a safer place with Hussein out of power?)! And of course, it looks like the incoming bozo speaks out of both sides of his mouth even more than conventional politicians, so.....in that context.....

All I can say is: damn good thing we had FDR sitting in the Oval Office during that time. A damn good thing.
