The undercard after the big three fights is a little thin, so I'll stick to those three.

Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz

This will either solidify Machida a a threat at 205 or be the return to the top contention spot for Ortiz. Like him or hate him, Tito Ortiz is a threat to just about anyone at 205 and was once the biggest, baddest man in that division. And yes, if it hadn't been for grabbing the cage, he would have beaten Rashad Evans. The GnP style has worked for years against lots of people and Tito has got to know that this might be the last hurrah for him. Win, he's back. Lose, he may never see a title shot again.

Machida has a lot of talent and is dangerous no matter where he is. Everyone says he has no weaknesses, which is a fallacy. I think his weakness is his killer instinct. Four fights in the UFC. Only one stoppage. He has to be able to jump on Ortiz and stay there given the opportunity.

I think it'll be a long night for these two. Ground I give to Ortiz. Stand up I give a slight edge to Machida. But if Ortiz can put Machida down and grind him like he has so many, it'll be over quickly.

MY CALL: Ortiz by Decision. :upsidedow

Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva

Another big fight at 205, this will be a stand up war. Jardine has never shown any inclination to take anyone down. He's also shown that he can take a punch, taking several before succumbing to Houston Alexander. He's knocked out Forrest Griffin, who's known for being tough as nails, and fought a perfect fight against Chuck Liddell. Jardine knows that there's no reason he can't win this fight and no reason he can't stop Silva.

Silva needs this win. A loss here puts him in the same boat as Ortiz, never seeing a title shot again. Silva lost to Liddell, but Jardine is smaller physically and not as technical a counterpuncher as Liddell. And as always, with Silva, you're only one knee away.

If Jardine can stay upright, he'll have a real shot and grinding down Silva slowly or even scoring a knockout. If Silva comes out blazing and Jardine isn't ready, it can be over very quickly. Still, Jardine's proven everyone wrong before.

MY CALL: Jardine by Decision. :bubble:

BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk

Easily the two best at 155, this will be a great fight to watch. I think it'll be over a lot quicker than it should though.

Sean Sherk is fired up, has unmatched cardio, is one of the best wrestlers to ever turn to MMA and is the strongest man at 155. He deserved the belt when he beat Florian for it and it was about time he won gold. BJ can't match him in strength or in cardio. The longer the fight goes on, the easier it will be for Sherk.

Here's the problem. BJ Penn has made a living off of beating wrestlers at MMA. Jens Pulver: Stopped. Joe Stevenson: Stopped. Matt Hughes: Stopped in the first fight, controlled until Penn got hurt in the second. All of these men are terrific wrestlers and physically huge compared to Penn, and Penn put them all away. Penn has better stand up, can take all kinds of punishment, is in better shape than he's ever been and has possibly the sickest ground game in MMA.

Sherk is a phenomenal athlete and a force at 155, but he offers nothign to BJ Penn that Penn hasn't seen and stopped before. Epic fight? Yes. Long fight? Not from where I'm sitting.

MY CALL: Penn by Submission in Round 3 or less.

See you on Saturday night!

I see two tings I disagree with,
1. If Tito didn't grab the fence he would've been suplexed
2. Jardine is Chuck's size, same height (6'2), weight (220lbs. fight time), 1 in. shorter reach (Chuck had a 6 inch reach on Silva, so Jardine will have 5in.)

It's gonna be a good night of fights that's for sure.I have no predictions, all of the fights just seem to close to call. But,who I would like to see win are Sherk,Silva,Machida in the main fights.I really hope they air the Soko/Nakamura fight as well.

Fair enough on the Tito fight. Jardine may be the same measurements and reach, but his build is different. Jardine is bigger across the shoulder whereas Chuck is huge around the midriff. That means that Chuck can generate a lot more power in his punches than Jardine can. It's part of the reason Chuck can KO people so easily.

You are right, though. 🙂

Jardine has power down the middle, he rocked Forrest and knocked Chuck down with the same punch, Silva's style puts him in the pocket a lot.

Agreed. I still think Jardine is a smart enough fighter to do what Liddell did and play the distance card. Getting in close could cause problems.

Distance is definately what Jardine wants in this fight. In the Liddell fight Jardine looked the best when Chuck wasn't being agressive and he was dictating the pace.Wandy probably isn't going to stop coming forward and Jardine isn't the counter fighter Liddell is.Set aside fighting styles,it probably will come down to size.Training with Couture,Wandy may have been working on cutting weight as well. One of Jardine's keys to winning is definately avoid this,

Can't forget about Jardine's kicks. He has some nasty kicks that he hasn't busted out in a while. I believe Jardine will use more kicks in this fight, especially leg kicks, to set up his hands. This fight probably won't go the distance. The winner of this should face Evans and that winner should face the winner of Griffin/Jackson.

Penn is like GSP and Anderson Silva, he is the best in the division and well above the competition. I just don't think Sherk is on Penn's level. Penn will probably submit him in the 2nd. If the fight goes beyond the 3rd, I will be surprised.

Jardine is taller and his striking skills are more polished than Wand's. In the other hand, his chin looks suspect to me since his quick loss against Alexander. If Wand manages to clinch him, he's in trouble.
Win or lose, Ortiz will leave UFC because of the bad blood between him and White. The bout with Machida seems great on paper, but I wonder if their respective fighting style are complementary to offer a good show.
Nakamura should drop at 185 lbs.
Reljic seems to be a young promising fighter, but it's probably a bit too soon for him.
Yoshiyuki Yoshida could succeed in the Octagon. He's one of the rare Japanese fighters who know to use elbow strikes correctly.

Great night of fights.Penn's improved training and dedication has raised him to an even higher level,if that's possible.Who would of thought that fight wouldn't hit the ground once, surely not me.Sherk's stand up looked good but he was just overmatched it seemed.

Tito/Machida pretty much played out as expected.I almost shit when Tito caught Machida in that triangle.

Every fight was entertaining but I was most happy to see Wanderlai win again. With another win he is right back in the hunt.I thought Jardine was going out on a stretcher.

I won't miss Ortiz. I never liked his fighting style, nor his "Huntinton Beach Bad Boy" gimmick.
Machida proved he can wrestle too.

I was surprised by Wanderlai. He really peeled Jardine's wig back. Now he should fight Rashad Evans to see who is the No. 1 contender.

Machida took Tito took school. I never want to watch Ortiz again. He is a ungrateful crybaby.

Personally i felt Silva has been the best fighter in the world since he destroyed Sakuraba in 2 minutes in Pride many years ago and sakuraba never was the same again

Wand's win didn't surprise me, even if Jardine is a pretty good fighter.
In my eyes, the real upset in this event comes from Goran Reljic.

I think Rashad would need some more significant wins before he is fighting for no. 1 contender. He has potential but he's not there yet.IMO

Speaking of Sakuraba,he has a fight coming up against Melvin Manhoef in Dream. He better take Melvin down fast or hope he has good dental insurance.:jester:

All the newcomers (Palhares, Reljic, Yoshida, Kim) were quite impressive for their debut in the octagon. Even Mendes despite his loss.

Ever since Silva destroyed sakuraba(and then twice more after), The Gracie killer just hasnt been the same

Manhoef is a one-dimensional striker. So Saku can submit him as Yoon Dong Sik and Akiyama did.
