Phil Mickelson wins first British Open

Tiger Woods began the final round of the 142nd British Open two shots behind leader Lee Westwood at Muirfield Golf Club.

But it was Phil Mickelson who played lights out to win the British Open. Starting the day +2, Mickelson shot a 66 and finished at -3. He only had to wait out the golfers finishing before he was able to heft the Claret Jug.

Adam Scott was the leader at one point at -2 but faltered mid-round.

At the same time, Mickelson birdied four of the last six holes including No. 18 where he hit one of the greatest fairway wood approaches in major history.

Westwood was 0-for-61 in majors entering this championship, and Woods, a 14-time major champion, was 0 for his last 16.
