I have had very bad luck with kazaa lately. It seems that no matter how many versions of something I try to download I always get a "more sources needed" thing. Even when the search result said there were like 100 sources! Also I have had trouble finding ANY programs I want.
Um...legal free programs that is...

I downloaded and tried eDonkey. A bajillion search results and I have no trouble finding stuff and hanging onto it to download but it is SOOOOOOOOO slow!
Now I have a very fast connection to the internet but the very fastest spedd Ive gotten there is around 25K/s and it's usually around 2 to 5 K/s. Ive had it running all night and day and Ive only gotten one tiny 33meg program out of it.
Also I'm in people's queue like #2000...not like Kazaa Lite where you start immediately.

Anyway...can you recommend some other good P2Ps for me to try? Hopefully with no nasty adware or spyware attached! 😀

It really depends on what kind of stuff you want. I find that for media and large files Bit torrent is the best, file swarming makes it very easy to get a lot of people sharing one file fast to make the download faster for everyone.

Most P2P I've tried are slow but you might want to give DC++ a try if you can figure it out.

Direct Connect ++

Bittorrent

If you opt for bit torrent I'd also get a bit torrent client. The one I like best is torrent topia:

Topia

You'll also need some torrent sites. Bit torrent works by you downloading a really small file and then opening it. It'll open your client and connect to your peers who will then 'swarm' the file to you.

I have heard the term "bit torrent" before but I havent a clue what it is or how it works. Anyone care to give Nessie a quick Bit Torrent 101 lesson?

Put a 2nd computer with some decent RAM and hard drive space and no resource hog application running in the background other than an antivirus on your home Windows network only for P2P downloads. Do not use McAfee or Norton Antivirus as they are resource hogs. You can run spyware scans manually to remove parasites left behind. This method will give the computer optimal bandwidth on your broadband connection for downloads. If you want security, you can enable NAT, MAC filtering and other hardware security options on your ethernet or wireless router itself.
I use Emule, WinMX and BitTorrent on this 2nd computer and usually let it run overnite or sometimes a day or two at a time to finish a large download.
This 2nd computer frees up your primary computer for usage during large downloads.

One word: "WinMX"

I've been using it for over a year and have never had a single problem with it. Its free, its fast and if anything its appearance is a little intimidating with alot of buttons and fields but it still beats the crap out of Kazaa and the rest. Its better at finding MP3's more than anything else, but you can find pretty much anything with it and it will warn you if it thinks the file might be corrupted BEFORE you download it......

WinMX is good again> I stopped using it ages ago cause it started to suck for programs. Maybe I will try it again. Thanks in advance for the link, HDS...hopefully it will help me. 😀
I only have the one computer for now and no way to get a second in the immediate future. One thing I don't have a lot of is memory though...I think Ive got like 300 and something megs of RAM. Ive got a good hard drive though.
Thanks all for the help. 🙂
I finally managed to get a large program downloaded. 2 actually. Ones that I have been looking for on Kazaa for an eternity.
The one turned out to be nothing remotely related to the name of the archive and the other was an archive that required a password to open it. wtf??

kooieca told me once than he used emule with good results, but i haven't tried it by myself.

You can pick up a halfway decent used or refurbished Pentium 3 system with at least 256mb SDRAM at a computer shop near you for around $50 to $75 bucks or so, maybe even less. You can pick up a used 17" CRT monitor for around $30-40 at same said shop. Scrape together a keyboard, mouse, some extra CAT5 ethernet cable etc and you are set for a 2nd download only computer. Try for the 256 RAM on the pc because you want to have Windows 2000 or XP running on it to manage the system resources better. Then use WinMX for music files and Emule for everything else (data app's etc) and you should be fine for a 2nd computer. Emule and WinMX are very good for little to no spyware. When downloading off P2P systems though, avoid downloading any program executable file (.EXE, .BAT, .COM, .BAT, etc) equivalent right off the bat since many forms of viruses, worms and trojans are hidden in these "bombs". Like, if you want to download the full version of MS Money, opt to download an .ISO, .RAR or .ZIP file over a .EXE and ALWAYS scan the downloaded file for viruses BEFORE you extract it. It is a good idea to create a folder called "Downloads" and configure the P2P's preferences to always download files to that particular folder. This makes it easier to do manual scans with your antivirus programs and quarantines any active virus, worm, etc hidden in archive while your virus shield runs in the background.

i suggest using soulseek, its yet to be targeted by any watchdog groups yet

Its only 1 on 1 downloading and u cant differentiate between mp3\mpeg or whatever unless u put it in the search but does have a large selection and alot of rare stuff i couldnt find on the others and as far as ive discovered, no spyway\malaware

Wow...are used computers really that cheap? When I am no longer worried about them shutting off the internet connection because I can't pay the bill I will look into it definately! 😀
My computer now is pieced together from a 1.2 gig chip and a motherboard that my brother sent me, my old 32 meg video card, a new (!) hard drive, a CD burner from an old computer and a CD drive from an even older computer. And a floppy drive that was sitting out and we're not sure where it came from. 😛
One day I hope to buy a kickin multi-media pC (pr build one) but for now this is it 😛

Oh yes...I believe I finally figured out the whole bit torrent thing. Man is it cool! I've been searching and downloading all day and I managed to get 4 or 5 BIG files! That's better than my success rate with Kazaa any day. Will still check out WinMX and maybe eMule in the near future. A question I have though...

I've found a ton of places online to download torrent fiiles but have had limited success with any individual site. Is there any place you can recommend?

Thanks SO much for all your help!!

Once again Ness, it depends on what you want! I have a load of god anime download sites because that's more or less all I download.

The fabled suprnova is deaded so that's no use.

I'm glad it worked though, I was dreading having to explain router port forwarding in case it was working slow x_x

If you can give me some examples of what you want to download, I can look for you.

DC++ got the best review in a computer magazine I read, and they had a test of all P2P programms.

Kazaa stinks. Lots of spy- and adware on it.

I have pretty much all the music I want...and what I want there I can USUALLY find okay on kazaa. What I have the most trouble finding is games. But it's getting harder and harder to find games that will run on my computer because it's a bit old and everyone is uploading/downloading brandy new fancy schmancy ones that I can't run. 🙁
Does anyone know how to backup or download PS2 games?

sometimes u can just do a google search and see if u can find the game, sometimes some servers have them up

But ive gotten several decent games off soulseek, no problems yet

Games! Why didn't you say so. If you like old games, these are a must see:

www.freeoldies.com (links to sites with old games)

www.the-underdogs.org(the BIGGEST archive of abandonware on the net)

PS2 games... Hmm... lemme think on that. Your best chance would be to create an image file, or search for images of the CDs, then use an emulator(or burn them to a CD and play on PS2 if you have it) to play it.

Man so many great sites! Thanks guys! I hope I have the time to check them all out!
I downloaded a game using bit torrent and it gave me a cd image...luke bin and cue or something. So I had to go through the long process of figuring out what to do and what programs I needed to do it with.
And after all that the game didnt even work with my sucky graphics card. 😛
Anyway...point...point...YES I had one...
So you can burn PS2 games using a CD image? I thought there was something physically burned into the disc surface (that little PS2 logo) that kept you from being able to copy them...but I see so many PS2 games for download on the torrent sites that it must be pretty easy. So all I would have to do is burn the image to a CD? I used Nero...will that do it?

I used Nero to make a bootable CD from a download just recently so it does do it. One of the menu items like File - new - burn Image (or something).

I was doing a linux disc but it's probably the same.

Hmm... I think DC++ sucks... the sharing idea is sooo darn annoying: "Please share only 50gigabytes to get good downloads" --- bah I don't have so much in my comp... probly 2 gigs? ......... I hate that... I like sharing HERE , not THERE... because they scramble my upload (My download/upload: 1mpbs/128kbps, so my upload gets jammed pretty easily, that's why I don't like to share with programs and it takes sooo much time to upload here, still I do that every once in a while) ... and DC++ is very complex and you can't figure anything out of it... there isn't a own slot for the "Minimum Share Requirement" ... It's always hidden in the description screen and you can't just make them go in any order... besides...
I suggest these : Kazaa K++, eMule, Azureus (I can't use it, since it must send 2x to all, who download from me... and I can download only half-speed... I mean... then I could download the speed of a 56k modem, if my upload is 128.... tough luck. If you have a good upload, use Azureus, the BEST bittorrent client ever!!) and I will try "Shareaza" some day... some people have said, that it's good... so ... I have downloaded it, but I haven't installed it yet 🙁

So Kazaa i have never tried ....... and i won't cause it tooks too much place and goes everywhere on the HD so .......
Tried just overnet and edonkey ......... cool but not very discreet 🙂
Now i switched to Shareaza and it's great !!!!!

I have learned the secret of bit torrent. It's definately quantity over quality. Or rather...quantity over variety. You can have anything you want with a TON of people uploading to you and never have yourr connection drop if what you want is one of a doxen or so really popular things. Searching for something specific seems to be useless but I have had great success browsing through what more people have and picking something I want. It's worth the trade off though.
Last night I came away with a couple of full length movies, season 1 of a tv series, and a program or two. Not a bad deal. I reached a high combined download speed of over 800k/s and over 250k/s on a singe download. Schweeeet.
I have been using a program called burst! for torrents but I have been having problems with closing it when I'm done so I will try the one you mentioned, somebody23.
Thanks again for everyone's input and help. 😀 If you wanna help me even more you can throw me a free DVD burner now 😀 😀 😀
