On January 14, 2010 I had to put my beloved dog, Shayna, to sleep. She was a lot sicker than we thought and it was the right thing to do, even though that doesn't make it hurt any less. Here is a poem I found on Facebook on a pet loss page. I cry every time I read it.

If It Should Be If that I grow weak, and pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done, for this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand, don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest, your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years, what is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so, the time has come, please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend, and please stay with me until the end.
I know in time that you will see, the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved, from pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve, it must be you who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years, don't let your heart hold back its tears. - Author Unknown

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I lost my family dog in Feb. of '09; she was 17. It was an extremely painful experience.

Here's another little poem that might assist you during the grieving process.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

That gives me a lump in my throat. My dog died 3 years ago. I got a phonecall at work from my grandad at home asking could I drive home on my break. There was my dog in my back garden. I had to put him in a black bag and put him in the boot of my car. I brought him down to the vet to be cremated. Absolutely one of my worst memories ever. I had to go back to work after that and I never felt so sad in my entire life. People were asking what was wrong and I felt ridiculous that I was so sad because of a dog. It's nice to see that others love their pets as much as I did.

Aw those poems are beautiful! I was devastated when I lost my dog a few years back. My heart feels for you. 🙁

Wow, that poem reminds me of the song the character Katniss sung to a wounded and dying girl in the book The Hunger Games:
Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head and close your eyes
And when they open, the sun will rise

Here it's safe and here it's warm,
And here the daises guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you

Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when again it's morning, they'll wash away

Brings tears to my eyes everytime. :redheart:

This was really touching and important to many people. Having spent a good portion of my life rescuing animals, I've had to put many down over the years. I couldn't even imagine losing my dog right now, he's the best friend I have and we're a team. But, if the time comes when I have to make that decision for his benefit, I'll remember this.

I am truly sorry for your loss. People often overlook the importance of our four-legged friends, and they DO become legitmate family.

I am very sorry for your loss. I've made that decision a few times too. Great poem, whoever wrote it.

Take what comfort you can from knowing you did the right thing, as difficult as it was.
