anyone know a way to get rid of them?

I have one that undoubtedly lives kinda near my house, as my dog found out the hard way.

I'm told porcupines aren't afraid of many things, including dogs... and I can't trust Bailey (the dog) enough that if he should see/smell/whatever the thing again that he won't want a 'rematch' of some kind.

How can I be able to have him outside in his own yard without risking a fight with one of the nastiest woodland creatures in my area? Any ideas?

Find the nest then mothball the shit out of it my friend. 😉

Strings of garlic should get rid of the little guy. While he may nibble on it, he'll find it doesn't agree with his digestive system and leave your place alone.

This is the least aggressive way to get um' to leave the area.

Buy a bear, dress it in armor, give it a sword, and let it loose.

If the porcupine is still there in the morning, then I'm not sure there's anything that can be done.

If it's just the one porcupine, you could get a trap. Once trapped, you could transport it far enough away that it won't come back. If you live in an area porcupines commonly wander around, though, maybe you need to make your living space less attractive to porcupines. I really don't think you can scare the critter off, porcupines aren't very fearful.

Although, my honest reaction is to say that the dog should be sufficiently traumatized. If not, he deserves a second encounter.

You almost make it sound like he should be more concerned with the damn rodent than his own noble canine! A trap? A TRAP? He should put himself at risk to transport a overgrown rat with spikes on it's back off HIS territory? SCREW THAT SHIT! MOTHBALL OR SONIC EMITTERS ARE THE WAY TO GO! If that fails go with bits of meat sauteed in cayenne pepper! This VARMIT MUST GO DARN IT! If all else fails, hire an animal control specialist!

Nuke it from orbit! Only way to be sure!

Seriously though, how will meat sautéed in cayenne pepper help? The dog will eat it, and be even worse off. Porcupines are herbivores. I'm not entirely unsympathetic, but the porcupine is a living animal, and by all accounts about as intelligent as the dog. Animal control would help, but it sounds like they live in a remote area. I still say trapping it and moving it is the easiest solution.

I would say if you're not sure, talk to Animal Control or a vet or someone else in your area for the best way to get rid of porcupines.

As for letting the dog out into your yard, is it possible to just do a quick check to see if Mr. (or Ms.) Porcupine happens to be around? What about having someone watch the dog? At least until your not-so-friendly-to-dogs-visitor takes a hike?

Oh! Oh! Call in Vexcon! I would love to see a porcupine episode of Billy the Exterminator! lol
