I've never been one to post personal issues unrelated to kink on fetish forums.
Sometimes I post them now in specialized subgroups on Fetlife, but even then
I am very careful. If something bad happened in my life and I want only sympathy
and kind words, I'll say so. I generally reserve this sort of thing for a blog, not a forum.
If I am looking for advice, I brace myself for whatever people may throw at me. Sure,
sometimes it's nice to get a different angle from a stranger who knows nothing about
the situation other than what you've posted. At what point, though, is enough enough?

So, do you see forums such as this as an outlet for your own personal, well, bullshit?

I normally don't post really personal stuff on public sites like this, especially it being a fetish forum. Don't get me wrong, I love the people here and consider many of them to be great friends - but I try to just keep it kink related on a site like this. It's not a regular forum. But I also don't usually go to strangers for advice, it's uncomfortable for me.

I think a lot of people post their problems to people they consider to be friends. Or at least, people they respect the opinion of.

If those people happen to reside on a fetish forum, what option do they have? General Discussion exists for precisely that reason.

Perhaps we are defining personal issues differently. Also, I think that more important than
the posting of the issues is the way one responds to the desired advice and criticism.

IMO, if you share your advice, and the person doesn't want/like it, move on. You've shared your advice, it's not wanted/liked, there's no advantage to turning into a flame war, fight, whatever.

But, that is why we have private messaging and visitor walls. If I wanted to communicate with somebody on a extremely personal level, that would be my outlet. The "don't give a fuck" on the board is how you seek common interest, because people are bluntly honest.

This is a great place to post personal issues when one wants an objective opinion. Many of us have been here for years, we're invested, yet we're all still anonymous and removed from the situation.

Now when an individual becomes and "askhole"=someone that constantly asks for advice but does the exact opposite everytime, then that gets very annoying due to the fact that we are a close knit group that does care about the welfare of our group members.

I've posted personal threads and learned a WHOLE lot from it. I even had people PM me to give me their sage advice. It was great and helped me see the world in a different light. I owe these individuals that are far wiser than I a great thanks!

If the TMF is more than just a place for fetish kicks and porn; meaning, if it is also a place where the TK community gathers to better understand their TK fetish and its nature among peers and fellow enthusiasts, then I would offer that one's fetish and one's personal life are intrinsically connected. This is true, even though I don't normally do it, I definitely agree that people SHOULD be able to discuss personal issues in the General forum. As long as people understand that by posting, they are opening themselves up to the advice, opinions, and criticism of HUNDREDS of people with all different personalities and whatnot. As long as they're okay with that, then by all means, they should feel free to post personal discussions. Sometimes forums are great for that BECAUSE of the wide variety of responses they'll get.

But to be honest, personal stuff should be posted in a blog.
