Sorry I've been off the site for a while (although I imagine some may have been happy over that...LOL), but the winter has been a busy one. Both kids are on the Speech and Drama team this year. We have had many meets this year, and our school has won the Sweepstakes in all but one so far. We just recently completed the regional meet, which qualifies you for the state championship meet for one of the governing bodies in this state. They both qualified (son in duo acting, daughter in radio broadcast and poetry). They will do all of their events at the other state meet (son: Duo acting, public speaking, impromptu speaking, and extemporaneous speaking; daughter: Radio broadcasting, interpretation of poetry, and storytelling). They have reached the finals in all of there events but one. My son did not final in public speaking (also known as original oratory), mostly because his speech was on the current health care bill and many of the judges gave him low marks because he argued against it and the areas where the meets were held are highly liberal. You are supposed to score on the delivery and how well it it written, but some can't seem to separate their views from their judging. Oh well. In giving his speech he has changed some of the opinions of his teachers and teammates, so he must be doing a good job with it.
But the one busting my buttons pride-wise is my daughter. At the regional meet, she WON the regional meet for Interp of Poetry. This is the first time in her life that she has won first place/prize in ANYTHING! She worked so hard last year and never reached a final, but she worked even harder this year and has reached the finals in each of her events, including a meet that had a school for the performing arts competing against us!
So, I've been busy judging events and being a very proud parent the past couple of months. I just finished Chapter 5 of The Temple of Androcon tonight, so hopefully it will be posted in the next day or two. Then, I'll be back to my (ab)normal posting self....
