I stumbled across an interesting article about phobias today (being that it's Friday the 13th as I write this). The article listed some of the more unusual phobias, and among them was:

Pteronophobia: the fear of being tickled with feathers

I've also seen it described as a fear of feathers (not necessarily the tickling). Any thoughts on that? Anyone ever hear of someone with that phobia? Certainly these forums would be like a nightmare for someone like that.

Interesting that a portion of the prefix to that phobia is 'ptero...' which brings to mind pterodactyls....

......so.....would it give the phobia more credibility if someone had a fear of being tickled with pterodactyl feathers??

....won't see their ass in the Museum of Natural History, then.....that's for sure.....

....in all seriousness though, I've not heard of that 'til now.....interesting.

lol I'm sorry, but if someone I knew were afraid of tickling (http://zohrala.com/hypnotherapist/phobia_list.htm states that as equivelant) I'd just have to play all the tickling videos in front of her lol.

I wonder if this falls in line with fear of hair? (Chaetophobia, Ortrichophobia, Trichophobia or Trichopathophobia)

Fear of being bound or tied - merinthophobia
Fear of being tickled with feathers - pteronophobia

If mania (obsession) is the opposite of phobia...

I must have merinthopteronomania

So... what kind of a dinosaur was a thesaurus?

Just imagine having pterophobia, also having Podophobia (the fear of feet,) and the one most men have Venustraphobia (Fear of beautiful women)

actually this is a site whit the list of common phobias http://psychology.about.com/od/phobias/a/phobialist.htm

and the Thesaurus is a recently found type and is you look at it to post on this site the post will probally be extinct when you finish

While watching television a few years back there was a trivia question that was asked as to what kind of fear was Tetranonaphobia. When they came back from commerecials the gave the answer and showed a girls midsection being tickled with feathers. I think she was faking laughter, but it caught my attention anyhow. Thank heavens i don't have that fear.. :bowing:

Hee. My mind sort of went there, too. Actually, in case you were curious and didn't already know, it does all come from the same root. 'Pteryx' or 'ptero-' is a Greek-based root or prefix that refers variously to either 'feather' or 'wing'. 'Pterodactylus' means 'wing finger'. Another example is 'Archaeopteryx', which means 'ancient feather'.

ROFL ... more credibility? Something tells me that would give it much *less* credibility. Especially since there is no evidence that pterosaurs (including pterodactyls) *had* feathers. 😀 (Actually, some of them had a form of hair or fur.)

Well, of course not. The fossilisation process does not usually preserve the ass. :happyfloa

Actually, the opposite of 'phobia' is usually 'philia'. I have heard the term 'pteronophilia' used as one of the official tickling-fetish terms before. (Along with 'knismolagnia'.)
