Public Computer User Time Limits?...

I'm posting this thread with the disclaimer that I've not used a library computer in many years. That being said:

Do forum members think there should be time limits on usage per person at places like.. hotels? Where.. for example.. there would be a sign: "Time limit per user 30. or 60 minutes, etc".

As everyone who has read my threads knows, I have not had access to my own personal computer since June 19th, due to being in NJ with my mom for treatment. In that time, I have posted on the forum from the hotel's computer. However, only one time in the entire nearly two months, have I spent more than 30 minutes on the computer at a time, and that was when I was writing and communicating with my mom's Dr, before one of her hospitalizations, so it was important. Other than that, I know this is not my computer, and.. while I enjoy posting on TMF and talking to my friends, I also know that I should realstically limit such while here, to be fair to other users. My view doesnt seem to be shared by other guests of the hotel. The computer has a time used logger on it, so we can see how long others have used it. At times when I've logged on, I've done so after someone whose log time was one or even two hours straight.

Thoughts on this?

On a public computer,it makes sense to have a time limit. usually at places like a library, there are people waiting to get onto a computer. Motels, probably not so much.

Thanks, Zod.

In this hotel, there are people waiting to get on. Sometimes, when I'm on, even for just 5-10 minutes, I'll have someone literally hovering over me, asking me when I'm getting off. Many times my reply will be "In a few minutes, right after I'm finished reading this e-mail". There are times when people probably see I'm posting on the forum, but I really dont care what a bunch of strangers think.

It was the same at the truck stops that had a public computer. But we had to pay to use them . You would just get on,then some chump would want to know how much longer you'd be on.

Its a hotel computer, I say if nobody else is giving you or others the common curtiousy of getting on and off the computer in a timely manner then follow suit. Next time your on a computer take full advantage, who knows the next time you will be able to log on. Should someone put in a complaint just say nobody else seemed to care about taking forever on the computer while you waited your turn. Its nice your trying to be respectful and not take too long when your using the computer but sometimes its a bad thing. most people only look out for themseleves and won't do as you've tried to do. Just use it for however long you need to and don't worry about anyone but you.

Angel, thanks for your advice. I actually agree with it.

I'm HOPING that this will be an issue for only two more days. However, I wont know this until I see if my mom finally agrees to go home after her Dr appt today.

There is nothing like having something that belongs to you. You control it.

Public computers in a main room of the hotel....it's gotta be shared with all the other guests, and it's annoying. Don't assume that anyone is going to be limiting their time on it. When you get on the computer, take as long as you can and do what you need to do.

Have you tried using it at times when others aren't around? Peak hours at the hotel probably aren't the best time to sneak in there. Good Luck.

Thanks, Helena.

Actually, there are times I've come out here at one am to use the machine, but my mom doesnt like when I do that, because she's sleeping, and cant lock our room door from the inside, and shes not comfortable due to security reasons.

I actually suggested to the hotel manager about time limits on the computer, and she told me to send the suggestion to corporate HQ. When I get home, I think I'm going to do that.

They let you stay on an hour in most places, but if they catch you jerking off, they will kick you right off!

There should be time limit to use public computer. Because there are a limited number of public computer terminals. And it should be flexible like, time limits are one hour when others are waiting to use the computers and two hours when the public library is less busy.

I agree, Ish.

In the case I'm describing, this is a hotel.

My opinion is that the time limit should be 30 minutes in the daytime when it is likely more guests would want to use it, and say, 60 minutes at night, when the computer area might be less busy.

I doubt that the hotel I'm staying in will change their policy, and my guess is that people will continue to hog the computer like its their own.
