Okay, I must apologise for being so deeply sad and nerdy for ever considering asking this question, but does anyone know anything about the the pilot movei before Season 1 came out? Is it true that the lead role was played by Kristy Swanson instead of SMG? Anyone know anything about it at all?

It was a theatrical movie from 1992, and yes, it starred Kristy Swanson as Buffy. It also featured Luke Perry, a pre-Oscar Hillary Swank, Paul Reubens, and Rutger Hauer. I saw it in the theater, and enjoyed it in all it's silliness. The tv show was a big improvement though

It wasn't a pilot movie. They had no intention of making a series when it came out.
It's still very rentable or I'm sure you could get a copy on ebay or amazon. I have the VHS and I've had it for awhile. Cover is white with Buffy and Luke Perry on the front. It's set in LA, before she moves to Sunnydale. They refer to her "problems" at her old school a few times in the series.
I actually bought it on Amazon from an American supplier a couple of days ago, so I'm way ahead of you. 🙂
I also got the first series off eBay. They refer to a couple of things that happened in LA alright, one of which is the burning down of her school gym. This didn't happen in the actual movie, but apparently Whedon had it down in the original script. Why he'd then fuck the continuity up so badly by referring to something that was cut out is beyonds me though.
Oh well, who cares? I'm only doing it so I can letch over SMG. 😀

perfectly good reason to me! I have a giant buffy cardboard standup that an ex GF swiped off a street corner for me when they were doing heavy promos for the show.
