What is the protocol for whom I should contact if I think my food (something I bought from a grocery store) has been tampered with?

I bought a package of Capri Sun from the grocery store...I had one earlier, it was fine. The 2nd one I had had a really nasty taste. I actually started to pour it out into the sink, but I noticed the smell was really, really strong, kinda like fermented liquid or alcohol. I noticed that the side of the pouch was open on the side, not where I opened it, and on one of the other pouches had some brown liquid on it. Anyways, I checked the expiration date, and it's not expired. I really don't know what to do. What if it's something that's not good? What if kids would've ingested that? Am I thinking too much about this?

Anyways, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'm a little worried.

I would take it back where it was purchased and speak to the manager about your concerns of tampering and have him check the rest of the product...

The package was closed when I purchased it, and I don't see any liquid on the outside of the box. What about the company? Should I call them also?

The package should have a number you can call on it. Most do.

Perhaps you should call them first and tell them all of this and see what they say to do about informing the store as well......

Thanks you guys! I want to do that now, but unfortunately, everyone's closed! I hope it was a one-time thing, and that whatever's wrong isn't anything bad.

I hope so too, hon, but usually if something like that is contaminated within a sealed box, the whole lot # should be recalled for safety....

If the box has a phone number on it, you may be able to call any time.....

It is worth a shot..... :redheart:

First of all take it back to where you got it, and get you money back. seconed call the FDA and tell them what happend. Hope that helped

Thanks Ven :redheart: The FDA? Do you think it's that serious for them to get involved?

Its better to be safe then sorry right?

True, but I can see tests coming back and it being like lemon juice or something.....nothing to worry about in other words. I'm not really trying to make a big deal about it, I just think someone needs to be told.

well then go back to the store and tell the person in charge, that should clear things up

I agree with Angel_2 , call FDA and tell them what happened , it could be nothing but it could also be something serious .
Something similiar happened here in Portugal not 2 years ago . An old man ordered a bottle of water in a restaurant , it came still sealed and apparently untampered . The problem was that it was full of some light acid instead .
The old man ended up in hospital with internal burns all over his digestive system .

Even if it DOES come back as lemon juice, it means that there was something inside of your sealed food-product package that wasn't supposed to be in there. Even if it wasn't tampered with in some way, the accidental mis-packaging of a food product can be very, very harmful. For example, it would pose a danger to someone with a food allergy, since the contents of the package wouldn't match the ingredients that are disclosed on it. For another example, it could be something that that particular style of packaging isn't safe for: A Capri Sun pack will keep Capri Sun usable for a long time... But imagine if you filled that little pouch with milk? :xlime:

Angel is right: Better safe than sorry. 🙂

Okay, I get what everyone is trying to say. Thanks to everyone for the advice! :grouphug:

Ray's got it down, tell the manager of where you purchased it. From what you've described, it sounds as though it was punctured without being noticed (HDS worked at a food store and usually brown in an otherwise orange produce means that whatever you've bought has begun to solidify, always a bad thing.). There's no real telling how it happened, whether at the plant that made it, in transit somewhere, or in the store, but regardless the store should give you a replacement. You may want to jot down whatever number is on it, as was also said, and give the company a call. I seriously doubt the store will do anything more than throw it away (That's what we did. 😀). I wouldn't bother with the FDA, 'tisn't big enough for them to care about. Now, a whole pallet of the stuff gone bad, well, that'd be a different story.

You are exactly right, and so is everyone else. I called the company, who was very understanding, and basically pinpointed the problem to faulty manufacturing (due to the pouch already being open inside a sealed box), which made the liquid inside ferment (making that nasty smell and taste), and they are going to send me a refund in a week or so. Makes sense, so there's no real reason to call FDA. I'm just glad nobody tampered with it to intentionally harm anyone.

$2!!!! Who wants filet mignon?

Thanks guys! You are all a huge help! :Kiss2:

Nah....I'll probably find a finger in the little package or something.

"Hmm.....this little pouch feels kinda bulky.......I'll try it anyways and see..." :jester:
