My personal preference

I prefer the term Chicano (Xicano, whatever way you like to spell it), I know alot of people will be confused by this and think I am being anal, but I hate the term hispanic and even latin, I am not of Spanish Ancestry, I am of Mayan and Aztec ancestry so I see little reason why I should be named of Spanish or Italian descent (although no offence meant to these groups).

Our original term for people of Amerind extraction is Nican Tlaca (Native People) and our term for ourselves was Mexica (May shee kah) and Maya.
Aztec refers to the original Nahuatl group who migrated out of modern day Southwest US from other Uto Aztecan people to avoid persecution and intermarried with other people and became the Mexica.

Thanks for the insight, RedMan01. Is Mexica the preference overall, or is it a new term (at least to us 'gringos' anyway...lol) that is taking over as the name for people of your ancestry?

Mexica

Mexica (pronounced May shee kah) is the term referring to the Aztecs after they migrated from Northern Mexico and Southern US away from the other Uto Aztecan groups (Comanche, Paiute, etc.) to Valley of Mexico, The Aztecs were guided by their priest Huitzilopochtli (wait zee lo potch tlee) to find a new home escaping persecution, he saw the symbol of the promised land so to speak (the Snake and Eagle on the cactus) and their the Mexica built their empire with Tenoch as the leader building Tenochtitlan (Tay nock tee tlahn, Tenochs land as the tlan is like Persian stan).

The Mexica Aztecs were part of the Nahuan group of the Uto Aztecan family,
the previous Nahuatls in the region were the Olmeca and Tolteca and later Mixteca, our greatest architechtural achievements were made by the Mexica and Maya, sadly no Mexica building survice, but most of the Mayan ruins do.
If anyone ever takes a holiday in Mexico, a good bet is Cancun, Cabo or Alcapulco in Yucatan as thats were most of the ruins are, its right on the beach, large malls there too and five star hotels. The cuisine is slightly different from most Mexican food as Mexican food is Aztec in origin (Enchilada, Tamalli, Taco, etc.), farely similar. For Nahuatl culture I recommend my home state of Morelos as 1 000 000 people here still speak Nahuatl as their only language.
