Random question regarding Search

I am not having issues, but just wondered why you have to wait 30 seconds to conduct another search? For example, if you conduct a search and it returns no results and you try using a different term and click search again it comes up with the message please wait 30 seconds in between searches (or something along those lines). Not that it is a problem waiting 30 seconds, was just curious as to why that is the case.

Sorry if that is a really stupid question- but I am not a very computer minded person.

Also on the topic of searching, in advanced search why is there an option to search child forums?

The 30-second delay is designed to keep the server from being overloaded if many people are searching the forum at the same time. The unfortunate term "child forums" is vBulletin parlance for what most people call "subforums."

Subforums are "children" of their "parent" forums. It's a term out of computer science/mathematics. Don't make much of it. 😛

But yes, as Missy Val noted, it is to prevent server overuse. Search is not an easy thing for any system to do; it requires a great deal of computational power to perform a search, particularly on text.
