When is major league baseball gonna wake up and try to create some type of level playing field.

Hell in a few years the Yankees and Red Sox may be the only two teams left in baseball and can really buy any players they want .

Crawford is a wonderful player but he isnt in elite category yet the Red Sox had no problem giving him 7yrs and at least 140 million.

Earlier in the week Sox stole Adrian Gonzalez for three minor leaguers. I know these were '' blue chip '' prospects but all Padres can hope is that one of three pans out to be a real player .

Yankees spend four hundred million on Sabathia and Texiera and will likely get Lee cause Yankees will sit back and wait for highest bid then annihilate it just because they can .

Yankees will probably also end up with Zach Greinke for whatever marginal minorleaguers they choose to dump on Royals .

Seriously, Do the Yankees and Sox now privately own MLB ???

Moves like this is the reason why Baseball needs a Salary Cap. only a handful of teams such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Mets ect can get big time players. Its not fair to the small market teams or the fans of those teams that a big market teams can just sign whoever they want for any amount of money. Take the Pittsburgh Pirates for example, they suck! that team hasn't done anything for years, their ownership sucks and its a shame that the people who are true fans haven't gotten anything year after year.

Sure big market teams are well within the right to spend as much as they'd like but whatever happened to good competition? lets give every team a fair shot and let the cards fall where they may.

Every other sport has a Salary Cap(Basketball, Hockey, Football) and it works, its time for baseball to do the same

and for the record I'm a Mets fan and even I don't like it when they go after every top FA on the market, All-Star players at every position don't win championships. Buliding through the draft with with a good mix of young and vet players are the keys to winning a Championship. perfect example the SF Gaints of 2010.

It does get sickening seeing the same teams finish on top year after year. It gets so boring watching teams like the Royals, Pirates, and Brewers suck annually.c

Unfortunately there is no bottom to the salary cap in MLB. A team like the Pirates consistently turns a profit and puts little back into the team. The NFL has both a low end and high end on the salary cap...In MLB you will NEVER hear the players complain about teams over spending because when the Yankees and Red Sox over spend it drives up salaries with all teams. Some of the owners complain in public but gladly take the money from the luxury tax that the Yankees pay yearly. Not only the Pirates but I believe the Royals and Brewers also profit annually from this no bottom cap, luxury tax system. The Mets are in trouble because Bernie Madoof got Wilpon's fun money.

Well there are also a lot of owners pocketing a shit load of money and not going after big names. Both LA teams have a bigger market then Boston as well as both Chicago teams. Look at what Kralf and Belichik have done with football in Boston by getting rid of the high price player after there peek. I would ask the owners what are they doing with the money they get from the luxury tax that all the teams pay that go over the league cap. Now take it from another angle Tampa Bay does the same thing and can't get 10,000 fans out to a game till playoffs then those f-ing cowbells come out. Back to Yankees now in 10 years of doing that they one 1 world series so they are buying wins but nothing else. Now question I have is why can Green Bay do so well with money but the Brewers can't answer product you put on the field. Steelers seem to make money but the Pirates can't and even the Penquins are making money now, so the small market is a cop out could other sports in those cities are doing good. In Real Estate it's Location,Location,Location in sports it's Product,Product,Product

Here a team average price for ticket is 35.00 and stadium holds 40,000 thats 1.400,000.00 a game now add in 82 games thats 114,800,000.00 thats before any TV or a item sold at gamenow I know the Phillies payroll is 142,000,000.00 a year and I didn't take for Jason's trade so it can be done by any team

I heard on the radio recently that when MLB went to a 4 team playoff format, the team with the best regular season record only won the World Series 1/4 of the time. Since they've gone to an 8 team format, the team finishing with the best record has only won the World Series 1/8 of the time. From what I understand there's serious talk of including even more teams in the playoffs so that percentage will get even smaller. So a huge payroll doesn't guarantee a championship.

Also I don't know if the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry would be as much fun with a salary cap and that's probably the best rivalry in American sports. Don't have a salary cap, have a salary floor. With the money the smaller market teams get from the luxury tax there's no reason they can't have a competitive payroll. Oh yeah actually there is a reason: the teams pocket the money! A salary floor would ensure that the luxury tax does what it was designed to do, instead of lining the pockets of owners of sucky teams.

Its a lot like the running bit of how Chuck Norris so tough and is such a bad ass.

The MLB season starts when the Red Sox and Yankees say it starts.
The Red Sox and Yankees decide who plays the world series and they make big news and no one else.

MLB tried to tell all teams to speed up there games and the Red Sox and the Yankees just laughed in there face. The Texas Rangers have a amazing shortstop in Elvis Andrus and a great closer in Neftali Feliz, not to mention what the Washington Nationals have in David Strasburg, but its not going to matter if these can resign their players or not because the Yankees and Red Sox will back up a brinks truck there houses and sign them away.

The worst part of all this? Baseball and Bud Selig could careless just so long as the ratings for Sox and Yankees are still there.

As a Red Sox fan, I have to say, I'm glad to see Crawford and Gonzalez in Boston.

HOWEVER, I agree with the idea of doing something to level the playing field. It's not fair that there are plenty of teams who enter each season knowing they have little to no chance to do anything in the playoffs. Specifically, I'm referring to Toronto and Baltimore (even Tampa, this year), and to a lesser extent, any other AL team who knows the Red Sox or Yankees will likely be the Wild Card each and every season.

I don't think a salary cap would fly, but I do think we could get rid of the divisions, and just let the 4-6 best teams in each league advance to the playoffs. Yes, the Yankees and Red Sox would still take up 2 of those spots (most likely), but the other teams would not be fighting an uphill battle to succeed.

This would also keep the rest of the AL East from having to face Boston and New York for one third of their season.

Authors Note: Yes, this was Buster Olney's premise for his column today. I'm OK with that, because it's a good idea, so I doubt he'd mind that I'm borrowing it.

LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX

LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX LUXURY TAX

Why aren't smaller clubs spend that money they get when Yanks ,and Sox go over the cap. Once again I'll ask why can the Steelers spend money but Pirates cant. Why can Green Bay spend money but not the Brewers stop crying and get those owners to put there hand in there pocket.

Because most owner arent able to generate the revenue that the Yankees and Red Sox can.

The Yankees have their own television network and were they can bring in funds to try and sign guys like Cliff Lee to what ever deal they want. The Rangers have a TV deal but not ike the Yankees.

This to me is the problem with baseball and why sometimes I cant be a fan, becuase the big teams like the Yankees and Red Sox go all out with their spending know they can beat any team out there to get who they want. If Baseball had a cap, the playing field would be a lot more even and it wouldnt be all about the Yankees and Red Sox.

Now add in the luruy tax from those spending over the limit they can do they choose not to.

Now they do better and then TV goes up ticket prices can up so dont use that piss poor reason the tamp Bay Rays did it the same way from a small market.

I'm glad to see both Crawford and Gonzalez are in Boston with them being healthy they both can very easily contribute 35 homers each and about 130 rbi's. Now that the Red Sox have a far better advantage over the Yankees this year it should be a great season

Hmm, You talk like Yankees and Redsox are always in the AL championship game... When they're not. Did the 'yankees or red sox make it to he world series this year? I don't remember... And they're both in the AL, there is always atleast one other team in the WS playing against them. And there are other really good teams in baseball that can beat the Yankees, and/or Red Sox.

Well Boston has to spend now to keep up with the Yanks but the Yanks,Soxs and Phils all made money cause they sell out every game. Put a better product on the field and then those teams will start to sell out as well. STOP THE WHINE GOD

Yeah I have been stopped watching baseball consistently because of both clubs. All the players they buy out are a bunch of pusses.

And now your team lose's one more person so there ratings go down and what they can charge the TV station so your the smaller markets problem you want a big city team without supporting the smaller market and keeping there money lower. Don't worry by signing Cliff Lee today this maybe be the last year I can buy tickets cause I can't afford another price increase so I'll just watch on TV and go to single games and wait for playoff to start

ps thank you for keeping your city payroll low so we can buy the bigger playrs
