At around 4 am on this day in 1836, a Mexican army led by President and General Santa Anna began their assault on this old Spanish mission.

Unlike what you have seen in films and television, the Alamo was located right in town, not on some desolate Texas prairie. Most of the compound was destroyed long ago, and the famous facade you see in pictures did not exist then. That was added in the 1850s, when the building was being used by the army to store gunpowder.

And that famous battle cry "Remember the Alamo" ? In those days the saying was "Remember the Alamo, remember Goliad." I won't get into that battle here.

That's an anniversary not much remembered outside of Texas. Thanks for the reminder, Bugman.

I remember going to the Alamo in 1967. For me it was the highlight of our cross country family vacation. I still have a Lone Star flag I purchased there. After the treatment of Fannin and his men at Goliad and that of the defenders of the Alamo, Santa Anna gladly signed over Texas after losing the Battle of San Jacinto to save his own hide! WOOT!

My parents lived in San Antonio before I was born,..... I've heard a lot about the local history and vibes.

I first saw the Alamo in 1969, also on a family vacation. I've been back several times, and really wish the cheesey gift shop was across the street. And the "portrait" of David Crockett looks suspiciously like John Wayne, not at all what Crockett really looked like.

San Antonio is a great city, probably my favorite one in Texas. What many people don't know is the Alamo is one of five missions still standing, and for history lovers touring the Mission Trail is a must.

I visited The Alamo when I received a weekend leave from completing basic training in the USAF.
