Singer Lesley Gore, born Lesley Sue Goldstein, died yesterday of lung cancer at the age of 68.

She came from nowhere (actually, from Tenafly, New Jersey, in Bergen County) to have a number one hit song, It's My Party (and I'll Cry If I Want To) in 1963 at the age of 16.

Although I never met her, I fell in love with her in 1965 when I was 15 and she was a month short of 19 when the photo shown below of her was published in Life magazine.

Rest In Peace, Ms. Gore.

"It's My Party (and I'll Cry If I Want To)" was one of the first songs I listened to as a child that wasn't from my childhood era of the late 80s/early 90s. It was track 1 on side 1 of a 'Party song' cassette. I don't remember any other tracks from the cassette!

A lovely photo, it's amazing how much more womanly a girl of 19 looked in those days - although now teenagers often look older than they are, it's not quite in the same way. They are more overgrown children trying to look older, rather than this classic womanly look.

I loved her voice and her song - especially You Don't Own Me. RIP.

She had several hits that I enjoyed listening to. RIP Lesley Gore. :sadcry:

I remember growing up in the eighties and listening to it.

As someone who was frequently targeted by bullies and very unpopular in school, I definitely relate to this song.

Thank god things got better in the later grades of Highschool for me.

I loved her music, her voice, and indeed, her courage in a time when women weren't "allowed" to express the sentiments she dared to do so. She truly was a rebel, pioneer, and wise-woman of her age.
