I thought the hard core Rock fans here at TMF who have yet to hear the news would appreciate this:

I just found out while reading the latest issue of Mojo Magazine (#160, March 2007) that Shocking Blue lead singer Mariska Veres died of cancer on December 2, 2006. Shocking Blue had a #1 hit in 1969/1970 with the original version of "Venus." A portion of the song was used in the intro to the song "Medley" by Stars On 45, a #1 hit in 1981. The song was also covered by Bananarama in 1986, also hitting the #1 spot on the charts. RIP, Mariska.

ah i remember that song when they recorded it...i used to think the singer's voice was male...rest in peace..

Man,i have not heard that song,or even thought of it in years....RIP Miriska....

Didn't know about Mariska's passing, but it's so cool to hear that somebody else also reads MOJO magazine, Frankie.

I always thought it was male also.
If it is the version of the song I am thinking, the guitar was excellent.
Venus was a good song, clean.

And Isabeau, you remember when they recorded it back in 70? You are telling on your age here. 😉

Hey, Drew!!! I've collected every issue of MOJO since 1997, which is the year when I realized that it was the best music mag ever! (Nice little plug for MOJO there). I'm always amazed at how that magazine's "Real Gone" section mentions recently deceased artists, producers, etc. yet there's hardly any mention of them at all in the United States, unless they're mega-famous like James Brown and Johnny Cash were, then they get full network coverage... deservedly so, of course. But had it not been for MOJO, it may have been months or years before I learned that Mariska died.

It does keep filling up, don't it?

If you believe in forever, then life is just a one night stand.
If there's a rock'n'roll heaven,
well you know they've got one hell of a band!

The Righteous Brothers.

They need to redo that song with new verses every few years.

I've been getting MOJO since maybe 2000 or 2001. It really is an awesome magazine, covering every style of music(rock, jazz, reggae, dub, blues, folk, rap, etc.) People in the U.S, probably have no idea that Desmond Dekker or Robert Lockwood Jr. have passed away, MOJO really covers all the lesser known artists.

Mojo Magazine turned me on to a lot of great artists like Ron Sexsmith, who, as far as I know, never gets any radio play here in the States, but his music deserves to be heard (another plug). Too many great bands and singers are being overlooked because record companies are busy promoting the flavor of the months and bland, sound-alike teeny bopper Pop-Tarts, etc. etc. But, in years to come, even some of the more prominent of these performers may wind up being mentioned in Mojo's "Real Gone" obituary someday.
