Here's another one of my rare general discussions... Unfortuately it not a happy, cheerful one like my others....It's just a small issue I wanted to talk about with you guys... :feather:

Well, here goes...


It was a normal day...

I log in to DA to see what new excitement will unfold...

But instead of excitement, I find a note with the most troubling news for me...

Here's where my story begins...

but unfortunately DA recently REMOVED them... 🙁


"Why were they removed" you ask?


Well, DA staff says that these pics were in violation of policy due to Rouge the Bat being ...

Underaged...



After reading the note, I thought it was pure BS... Last time I checked, Rouge is 18!

I scrambled around checking many video game magazines and lots of games sites to make sure she was not a minor and from all my research, confirmed she is indeed 18 ...

Naturally, I presented this evidence to DA's Staff/ Help desk in a "ban inquiry".


After waiting a few days, I get a reply from one of the staff.

It tells me that although they can see Rouge is 18 from the info I presented...she is portrayed as 17 in the animated show "Sonic X"


After reading that note...again, I thought "pure BS!!!"


Even though she is depicted as 17 in the cartoon... she is STILL depicted as 18 in the video games, regardless!

and the video games were out three years before the show debuted!

I assume most of the artists that have made "adult" Rouge pics in the past have made their pics based on her video game age...

So after all this, I see that she basically has two ages as far as DA is concerned....

Her 18 year old "video Game age" and her 17 year old "Sonic X" age...

Apparently DA is choosing her animated age over her already established video game age...

This, I thought, was confusing and unfair...DA has no clear indication of which age they use for Rouge, and in the end, my pics got deleted... as will many other pics on DA once the staff finds them...

I presented this info to the staff as well and after waiting a couple more days... they said that in order to standardize policy in regards to fictional characters, the staff is instructed to base any review upon the youngest age used in a consistent portrayal of the character...

That's understandable... but still "pure BS" on DA's part...

The last episode of sonic X ended in 2006... it is the tail end of 2008 now!

I haven't seen or heard of an official hint of a new season yet...

Pretty consistent, huh?... :happy:

I figure there's no more use in talking to DA about this any more...

Moral of the story...Deviant art can be a paradise for anything...but one wrong step and you've landed in a minefield of confusion!!!

age in cartoons and video game characters is a tough issue alright. Teen titans for example, we know they are teens, but 13 or 19? who knows? their artisits? the company that owns them? the fans? it's not like we can go prove it with a birth certificate, so if a site gets one tiny whiff that they might be underaged, they pull the plug on it as to avoid a legal thunderstorm. it sucks, but proving a character's age isn't an exact science.

I know this sounds really dumb, but would it be at all possible to say "well I've drawn her as an 18 year old - it's how she would look at age 18, so she isn't underage"? Maybe a dumb question, but I'm curious.

then i wonderd how do u see a year diffrence in an art piece , they way i look at rogue the bat is that she's at least in her 20's , so i realy don't know her real age there is no way that she looks underaged.U can clearly see any kid characters in the show.

It's sad they got removed over such a minor issue, i say u should at least get a free year subscription ^^

Soo are they gonna remove all stuff like that cous one time in a comic or cartoon show the adult charachters go back in time and then u see how they where as kids an underaged??

I've been hearing about this as well, dispite she's 18 in official sources, I guess her (and most other Sonic characters') short build can confuse people of their ages in general

I agree that is bull. The caution regarding underaged illustrations is justified, but quibbling over 17 and 18 is stupid. Especially when the drawing is the older version. This is not somebody drawing the younger version and using the older version as a cover. Common sense as usual is tossed out of the window.

I bet the problem is that Sonic X gets a little more public attention than the video games, given the fact that it has been part of many "saturday morning cartoon" line ups... a haven for kids to be watching as we all may know. So while an official source may say that Rouge is 18, they're probably going with the age where Rouge has the most public interaction for kids and that apparently is Sonic X.

EDIT: ORRRRRR they might be using it as a justifiable excuse to get rid of any "remotely" suggestive pics of her...

Doesn't 4kids dub this show? I heard they got other things wrong before. I would check out the Japanese version of this show for her age. She might be 18 as well in the Japanese version.

A veritable sham. So why's it up their ass anyway? Seriously, I stopped posting new art at dA because of things just like that. I fave and comment, but I don't contribute anymore. Well, that and the fact that the site gets more and more unreliable with every update they make.

Fuck their bullshit, seriously. It's going to get to the point where people under 18 won't be allowed to be shown at all. Anywhere. And if you draw or take a picture of a person who seems to "show great youth", then secret agents will come to your house and cut off your head with a dull saw.

I understand dart's side. They're just covering their ass. They just don't want to get in trouble, which is understandable.

On the flip-side, that means a lot of good artwork is now gone from the site, which sucks.

I'm sorry to everybody who got their Rouge artwork taken off the site.

Deviant Art's policy on her being drawn probably depends on the situation in which you draw her. They're obviously trying to cover their backs. She is of age, and I don't understand why they have such a problem with it, but if you draw her in tame or playful tickling situations they may turn a blind eye to it.
