First, I can't connect to the net when the dsl cable is connected to the router and the router is connected to the computer. Secondly, I cannot connect to the router config page on the net. I used to when the router was connected to the internet. 🙁

Could I have botched it by changing settings or did I botch it by forgetting to change the password?

Is there a way to fix this without buying a new router?
:veryhappy :cool2:

Sadly enough, I'm so computer-iliterate that I don't know if I should laugh politely at a joke, or commiserate with you over the problem with your computer.

I guess I'll try to fake it.... heh-heh, gee that's too bad!

(*mumbles to self*) router?!? heck I thought that was a carpentry tool!

Try plugging the DSL modem directly into the computer, establishing a connection, then quickly plugging it back into the router (and hooking the computer(s) back up to the router as well). This may work temporarily, but the router probably does in fact need to be configured differently.

The IP address/password to log into the router should be with the instructions that came with it. If you've changed it to something else, there is probably a "reset" button on the router which will restore all the factory settings.

Thanks guys I will try out the suggestions. 😎

our router went bad so i have the modem connected directly to the computer til we can figure out what is wrong. i dont need the router, however it does have the built in firewall and hubby cant use his laptop without the router. i have cable hookup, and lately when the router is plugged into the modem, the websites come up soo slow and i had to constantly shut down the computer , unplug the modem and router wait a minute and plug it all baack in. with only the router connected the connection is lightening speed. any one have any suggestions? we bought a new router, and it still happened.

Did you run through the entire installation process step by step or just try plugging it into the modem and computer? Routers, while a hardware component, are dependant upon the software that goes with them. I'd try un-installing the software and trying again. Don't buy a new router. You very likely just need to reinstall properly. Keep in mind that a router changes your IP address, which identifies you to your server. If you don't install things properly, it won't pass through the appropriate info. to establish the connection. Also, if yours came with Norton like so many do, be sure to establish your rules by hand. The default settings are pretty much worthless.

thanks ann i'll try that or better yet have hubby do it. i would hate to do anything to the computer. i'm not very computer savvy, this being my first one and only having it a year or so.

Actually, Isabeau, that was intended more for Rajee. I hadn't really read the other responses. Your own problem sounds like you may need to clean your system of old stuff and give yourself some room to work. (It may not be your router causing the problem...though reinstalling can't hurt.

If you use IE, try going to tools, then to internet options. In the box that comes up, go down to the temporary internet files section. Then dump your cookies and stashed files. That will clear up a lot of space if you don't normally do that. This is something I do at least once a month...usually more often. You may also want to look at DLing SpyBot and AdAware. Both pick up on things missed by normal antivirus, etc. and can keep your system much cleaner if run on a regular basis.

Between updates to Norton and these two and running the scans, I generally spend a half hour a week to be sure our system is clean. When you figure how much all the shit that collects can slow you down, it's actually saved time. Good luck!

Ann- I got an installation cd with my Linksys Broadband router. I followed the steps in the installation program. Initially hooking the router to the computer and the dsl wire to the router worked. I was trying to get a signal to my linksys wireless network card 2 floors down to my computer. It stopped working after I had changed some setings on the configuration webpage. Now I can't access the configuration page with the router connected or disconnected.
I'll try to re-install the router later, thanks.
