I agree. He did a pretty good job.
However, there were scenes where I think he should have toned it down. He occasionally became obnoxious and out of step.

Indeed. I don't even feel that he's typecast all that often in the last few years, and those who keep saying he's the same guy in every movie need need to actually see more of his body of work; if you watch Chaos Theory, Buried, and Definitely Maybe whether you like him or not you'll see very different characters and performances.
