Sean Avery Suspended

In case you haven't herd Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery is suspended indefinitely by the NHL for "inappropriate comments" after taking a shot at Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert (who portrays Kim Bauer on "24")

What he said entirely is “I’m really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada,” he said. Than he said “I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about, but enjoy the game tonight.” He didn't play in that game.

Of course he is infamous for his actions in the 2008 postseason while with the Rangers.

Don't know why he's being 'indefinetly suspended' for something that doesn't really concern the game in any way, shape or form.

What did he do wrong??? Let's start with the fact that he was born to begin with and then take it from there. He is an absolute jerk who said the WRONG thing. It may not have anything to do with hockey itself but these guys do have moral clauses in their contracts. You don't think that what he said has to do with the morality clause in his contract???

Part of signing with an nhl orginization is the understanding that you are representing them. I would not allow an employee of mine to use terms like that with customers and neither does the nhl. Especially on a live interview where a large amount of customers can be reached. He wasn't suspended for the sport side of the nhl but rather for the commercial side.

I don't know...I'm kinda middle of the road on this. Avery's a douchebag, no doubt about that. Always has been. I personally am glad to see him off the ice for a bit.

However...

Taking personal feelings out of it, I find it interesting that the NHL, of all sports, is taking such a strong stand on this. 6 games? For a personal comment? This is a sport that promotes thuggery, fights and violence. Not on the surface of course...but as any fan knows, these are things that put asses in seats.

It just doesn't seem to be on par with what other sports do in cases like this. Terrell Owens, while with the 49ers, took a touchdown ball, made the effort and show to walk 50 yards to the center star of Dallas' home field...and danced all over it, taunting 70,000 people. During a game. He got fined.

Even recently, when LenDale White made comments to the press after the Titans' first loss to the Jets. In front of a televised crowd, he goes off that it was a poor decision by the coaching staff to give him so few carries, whining like a child. Directly detrimental to the team and about the team itself. He played the following week. I don't remember, did he even get fined?

Point is, this seems like a pretty severe punishment for a comment. Sports are full of personalities like Avery, T.O., Randy Moss, Mike Tyson, etc. While I personally feel that Sean Avery deserves to be diced into bite-sized morsels and fed to a pack of elephant seals...I don't like where this could lead. I'd hate to see the NHL, or any of the four major sports, start to become the Morality Police.

I think it has more to do with the fact that Elisha Cuthbert is an actual fan of the game. You really can't have players attacking fans ( and she is a paying fan of hockey ) in that manner. As far as Morality Police, it has to start somewhere.
