So I have a ton of wood left over from a deck refurb project. Plenty enough to build some serious foot stocks. Someone once gave me some good advice… Such as… Making the foot holes more oval than round which I never would’ve thought of , or rounding the edges so there not as sharp on the ankles. so my questions to you are has anyone ever constructed their own set and if so, any ideas, suggestions, or pitfalls I should avoid? I thank you in advance.

When I built my stocks, I made the holes oval shaped and I padded them. Even with the padding I had one girl say her ankles were sore. I used medical grade foam and attached lycra over the foam and stapled it to the wood. Mine don't look very pretty but they are very functional. I also made the top board taller than the bottom board so that the toes don't poke up over the top of the stocks. That was just a visual preference. I like seeing the feet poking out against a blank background. I also attached my stocks to a 2x8 that is 6 ft long for stability. I always laugh when I see nice stocks but they attempted to strap them to the bed and they are flopping all over the place. Even with the 2x8 base I still have to strap the ends of the board to my bed frame for the really ticklish ones or they can tip the stocks at an angle potentially hurting their legs. I used metal L brackets to secure the top half of the stocks to the bottom half. They had holes pre drilled in them so I can just drop a machine screw into the hole and thread a wingnut onto it to lock the stocks. I attached the stocks to 2x4 feet with T nut type fasteners. The ones you pound into the wood with a hammer. They have little teeth on them that grip the wood. Then I used machine screws to fasten everything together. This way I can take them apart easily. Basically there are machine screws passing through the 2x8 board up into the legs of the stocks. Then there are machine screws that pass through the bottom of the legs into the bottom half of the stocks. Hope this isn't too confusing. I have seen lots of different designs. Mine is very basic but it works for me. The holes look round but that is just from the way I attached the lycra over the holes.
