Saturday night was NOT my night, guys.
My youthful "exuberance" has finally caught up with me. I drove up to Bell Mountain, a closed down ski slope in Northwestern Jersey, with a few friends to go sledding. We went at night because tons of kids are there in the daytime. We brought saucers and sleds... man, we were READY!
Now Bell Mountain, as I said before, is a closed down ski slope. It's right in front of a road (which may be why it closed down, lol), so there were two fences in front of the road to stop skiers from flying into the road. They left the outer chain-link fence up, but took down the inner fence, leaving the wooden support posts up. The expert slope (over 330 feet high with a width of about 50 yard) had 4 posts at the bottom of the hill. The chances of hitting them are almost nil... well, guess what happen me!?
The first few times I went down from about halfway up the expert slope with my friends on saucers. I have racing in my blood (check out my car at: http://members.aol.com/goaway669/) , so I have that "need for speed" complex. So, I decide to head up to the top of the hill. Not a problem for me, being that I run 3 miles every other day and bench 220 lb. Down I go in the saucer. I ditch the saucer 3/4 of the way down and stop myself by digging my heels and fingers into the snow, sending up a huge cloud of snow. I come to a skidding stop less than four feet from the chain-link fence.
Fast, but NOT FAST ENOUGH. Nope, not for Mr. Showoff! I snatch a cheap plastic toboggan from one of my friends and head up. No steering of any kind, no brakes. Just handles on the sides to hold on to. First time I go down from about 2/3 of the way up. I went so fast that when I hit the bumps, I was airborne. I stopped myself about 10 feet from the fence.
That was fun, but now I'm thinking: How fast would I go if I started from the TOP??? So up I go again, this time panting a bit as I make it to the top of the 330+ foot peak. I look down and I'm up so high I can't even see my friends at the bottom. All I can see is a vast blanket of white banking steeply away from me and thin black scar at the bottom that was the road.
"COMIN' DOWN!" I scream.
"...oh... kay..." I just barely catch, the sound of my friends' voices echoing faintly off the surrounding trees.
I get a running start, throw the plastic Toboggan of Certain Death under me, and land on it, already going about 15 MPH. About 100 feet into the trip, I'm going so fast that snow is spraying up into my face and blinding me. Then, I hit a bump that spins me around twice. When I right myself, I see that I'm 3/4 of the way down the hill and headed straight for one of the four inch thick, five foot high wooden poles!! I try to shift my weight to the left. No good. She wasn't budging. With only forty feet between me and the post, going well over what had to be 50 MPH, I roll off the sled and desperately claw at the half frozen snow, trying to stop myself, and then - W H A M! I hit the post square on the small of my back at what had to be over 30 MPH.
My body nearly wrapped itself around pole, my spine bending back so far I was waiting to hear it snap. I could feel the force of the impact jar not only my back but the jolt reach around to my lower stomach as well. My entire body went numb for three horrifying seconds, and I was sure I was paralyzed or dead... but then blinding, white-hot agony shot through my being, and I groaned in pain, unable to even take in a breath.
As the initial pain began to fade nad I was able to suck in air, I yelled for help, and my friends came over as I lay on the frigid ground recovering. Hot and sweating with heat of excruciating pain, I was sure that if I tried to get up, I would fall right back down and never get up again.
Ever so slowly, I got up the courage to stand and limp my way down the rest of the hill, black spots dancing in front of my eyes from the pain. My friends were talking to me, but I couldn't hear them too well because it sounded as if everyone was talking to me from the distant end of a tunnel. My friends drove me back to the house where we had gathered, I took some Alieve, rested for an hour, and drove myself home.
Fast-foward to tonight. I decided to go to the hospital, mainly due to the fact the small of my back was swelling something nasty and the pain was worse than ever. At least there was no blood in my urine.
The doctors took some X-Rays and told me that there was no spinal damage or kidney damage. Only soft tissue damage, and that I shouldn't jog or workout for a week (which really sucks, but I suppose I'm damn lucky). They prescribed me some Perkaset (pain killer) and advised me to use an ice pack for the next 24 hours to ease the swelling.
Apparently, Perkaset is a very powerful drug, but I took it over 2 and a half hours ago, and I don't feel any different, lol. I'm still in a helluva lot of pain, and I'm not "out of it"... at least, I don't think so.
Anyhow, I just needed to get that off my chest. Feel free to call me stupid, dumb, and throw in a "that's-what-you-get" for good measure.
Chalk it up 20 year old testosterone. 😎
Night, guys... I'm going to try to get some sleep.

All I can say is...

OUCH! My back hurts just from reading about your injury! I'm sending feel-better thoughts your way, and a little prayer for a speedy recovery. :wavingguy

Ouch indeed...

Will this scene appear in your next horror novel as well? 😉 Q

i drive 5 miles under the speed limit, and avoid rainy roadways.

feel better!

Hope you're feeling better, mate.

Stay away from snow; we Canucks are the only ones qualified in NA to handle such a fickle element. 😛

Cheers.😀

Owie! Man, that must've been a doozy. I feel for you, having run into my share of stationary objects while sledding.😀 A speedy recovery I hope you do recieve.
