I'm surprised this hasn't made it on here yet.
Shane McMahon, once considered to be the heir apparent to Vinnie Mac's WWE empire, has submitted his resignation effective January 1, 2010. It seems to have been a shock to both Vince and many of the WWE brass, including one Jim Ross.
Rumors are abound that he's going to help his mother run for the Connecticut Senate, or that there was a fight between Shane and sister Stephanie.
My own thoughts? Take a look at the history. Vince McMahon was 37 years old when he bought the WWWF from his father and began to take it global. He was already changing wrestling by the time he was 40.
Shane was born in 1970, so his 40th birthday is coming up next year. Vince would not sell WWE to him, or anyone else for that matter, and Stephanie McMahon is already seen to be (with husband Triple H), the future of the comapny. If Shane's going to make a name for himself on his own, it's probably not going to be in wrestling.
My guess is that Shane might disappear for a bit, help his mamma win the Senate seat, then look into MMA. While I'd love to see him pair up with Eric Bischoff in a joint "FU Vince" promotion, I doubt Shane's going to cut those ties that much.
Best of luck, Shane O'Mac. You'd have been an incredible wrestler if you weren't a McMahon.
