The film you mention was based on English author John Wyndam's novel. (He also wrote The Midwich Cuckoos, later filmed twice as Village of the Damned.)

That film only had a passing resemblance to the novel, but and English TV series was done in the late 70's or early 80's which was far closer to the original and IMHO limey opinion, much better.

To be honest, I'm too young to have seen that series when it first broadcast too, but I now have it on DVD and I've read the novel a couple of times.

He also wrote Chocky by the way, adapted for a kids TV series in England in the mid 80's, and apparently Spielberg has bought the rights to a movie version. Oh God......
