I know I posted this question and poll a few years ago, but.. I'm doing so again because of the timeliness of such.

Those who follow the subject know that Pete Rose has applied to the new baseball commissioner for re instatement to baseball.

My question is: Should he be re instated, and elected to the Hall of Fame.

My opinion.

Yes, Pete Rose should be re instated, and elected to the Hall of Fame. He has been banned for more than twenty five years,. and I think, has served his time.

While what he did was terribly wrong by betting on games..

The standard for his election to the Hall of Fame.. his 4256 hits as a player, more than any other player, are the standard by which he should be judged. Also, he got all of the 4256 hits honestly, which is more than one can say, for the tainted
"Steroid home run era" of such players as Barry Bonds, Arod, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire,, all of whom used PED's to enhance their massive home run totals, and thus, I think, they should be permanently prevented from entering the Hall of Fame.

He placed bets on the team he was managing at that time. That deserves being banned life, meaning he is denied the joy of attending his own induction. Let him be inducted after he dies.

PS: Joe Jackson (the saddest of the Black Sox cases) was banned for life and should be inducted into the HOF posthumously.

Pete Rose set the all time hit record using only his skill and determination without any performance enhancement. He was always competitive and ornery and didn't apologize. At least he never cheated on the field.

As manager he violated a clear rule and gambled on baseball.

Barry Bonds, on the other hand, still officially hold the all-time home run record, despite proven using PEDs. Hank Aaron still holds the record as far as I'm concerned.

I say let Pete Rose back into the game.

In my opinion, Pete Rose had many years and opportunities to come clean and always chose the low road. His baseball ability and hustle was unquestionable but he tarnished his own legacy. I say remember him as a great player and a horrible representitive of the MLB.

I realize other players with terrible character have been enshrined but that is all seperate cases and potential threads.

At some point far into the future the sun will enter into a Red Giant phase and as the sun swells it will engulf the Earth and vaporize it and of course vaporize the MLB Hall of Fame. I would say put Pete Rose in the HOF seconds before that event happens. 😉 😛

:rowfull: Good one, Kurch. :iagree:

As I think I stated before in another post, Alex Karras and Paul Hornung bet on football games during their playing days and are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame so yes, I believe Pete Rose should be in the hall.

mils has an interesting point of Rose being inducted after Rose dies, so Rose cant attend his own induction.

I might be wrong, but what I honestly think.

Either Rose will be reinstated, and will get in, before he dies.. or.. he wont ever get in. He might remain banned, or, maybe,, wouldn't get enough of the vote to get in, even if he is reinstated, because of what he did.

I personally think that Rose might well have been re instated already, had the man who banned him, former baseball commisioner A Bartlett Giamatti, not suffered such a tragic, untimely, fate, so soon after Rose's banishment.

The fate of A Bartlett Giamatti made what happened with Rose, an even more.. sensitive issue than it would be,

CAB, while I see your point about "Integrity's sake", look at other examples.

The late Steve Howe, was suspended SEVEN TIMES for drugs, and was still pitching for the Yankees in the early 1990s even after the seven said suspensions.

Dwight Gooden was suspended multiple times for drugs, and yet continued to pitch into the 2000s, at which point he retired on his own.

I still say, Rose did his time. He never did drugs, steroids, etc. Guys who did do such illegal substances, served far less time then he has.

Troy Renick of the Denver Post posted a very interesting observation about this subject.

Should be.

www.denverpost.com/troyrenick, for those who want a link.

Mr Renick said, and I quote..

"Rose should be reinstated to the game, but barred from the Hall of Fame".

In Mr Renick's view, reinstating Rose, would be "good for the game"

However, said writer also doesnt think that the Baseball Hall of Fame Veterans Committee/Expansion Era, would be kind to Rose, when it comes to allowing him into the Hall of Fame.

The argument is.. Rose would never get the 75% of votes needed for election to the Hall of Fame, and the Veterans Committee isn't likely to elect him either.

Such is a very interesting point.

Chances are, if this were to happen, even if they re instated Rose to the game, they would still be keeping him from the thing he really wants, election to the HOF,.

Or.. as milagros suggested, and is another very possible compromise..

Re instate Rose, and dont elect him the Hall of Fame, until after Rose dies, so Rose then doesnt get to attend his own induction.

Shall we instate a fourth and fifth strike at the plate too? How about 9 or 10 balls, or until the poor batter can hit something? Heck lets just throw out the rules altogether and everybody wins all the time.
