I post this topic due to the fact as i was driving home from the gym today i almost got side swipped by a old lady who blew thru a stop sign , luckly i blew my horn and she stopped a few inchs away from my car . She had to have been in her late 70s early 80s . So i ask for your opinions

Should seniors at a certian age have to re take the drivers test to see if they are still fit to continue driving .

Yes, mandatory testing.

I was almost killed by an old lady while I was sitting at a red light. She was coming up behind me and didn't even tap her breaks. I had to drive THRU the red light, to avoid her ramming right into me at her full rate of speed. Luckily, everyone else saw what was happening too and traffic allowed me to go thru.

Let's face it, plenty of old folks out there should not be driving.

I think in some states you have to retake the road test every few years after a certain age. I know IL does it.

Great idea in practice.

Personally, I think EVERYONE should have 're-tests' every 5-10 years.

We all know people who are horrible drivers in general, the world is polluted with them.

Mainly because people get complacent while developing bad habits.

Having some sort of standard in place to keep people's skills from 'diminishing' or getting 'over agressive' is always a good thing, IMO.

Same in Indiana. After a certain age you must take a driving and eye test every year.:sorry:

Yes.

Actually, I think drivers of all ages should be re-tested at least once every five years to verify that they can still drive without being a hazard to others. It's not just the elderly who become disabled.

Abso-freaking-lutely.

I'm sure everyone has stories, but have you ever driven in Boca Raton, Florida? I've never been so convinced that a trip to the pharmacy would definitely kill me.

If the license is good for 4 years then the person should be tested before he/she is renewed....

Everyone should be retested before renewal...

Am I right in thinking that it's a requirement to retake your test every 10 years in Australia? I vaguely remember my Dad failing his first time when we emigrated there...

I say yes. it is an individual thing though. my dad is 80 and drives fine, but i still think most seniors arent great drivers.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

If there's an age minimum for driving, there should be an age maximum.

Probably a good idea. Inconvenient for those of us who can drive just fine, sure. But this will ultimately save lives.

My family had an experience with my elderly aunt, who had to be convinced by her grown son and daughter not to drive anymore, once it was clear she was going completely senile. She actually drove home from a trip out to the store one day after one of her tires shredded, sparks a-flyin' all over the place. She didn't even notice. Clearly time to hide the keys for good.

Yes, that would definitely make a lot of sense.

My mom is 'only' 68, but I can already see her reflexes getting a lot slower and it's obvious she's having difficulties to fully concentrate on doing two things at a time, for example talking and driving or looking for directions in an area she's not familiar with and fully concentrate on traffic at the same time.
I'm afraid, I will have to discuss this with her in the near future and it will be painful, but I would hate myself forever if I'd watch her putting herself and others into danger without interfering.

Drivers lincenses don't have an expiry date where I come from and there are no re-tests whatsoever. That should definitely be changed.

Should Seniors retake driving test

I think everyone should have to retake the test every 12 years or so.There are a lot of idiots on the road who obviously don't know how to drive.

ok i think we would loose about 25 percent of the drives if we had to retest ever 5-10 years great for me less traffic for all of us and safer traffic.
at first i thought when you said seniors i thought you were talking about high school. I think they need to do more thing for people who drink and drive we just had another HS girl die from being hit by a drunk driver. an looks like he will just get another slap on the wrist. later all

Yes, absolutely it should be a requirement after a certain age

Great question! My first inclination was to say yes. I hate to discriminate, but I’m driven to road rage whenever I’m behind an elderly person doing 25 in a 50. But I shouldn't pick on just the seniors.

I like the idea that every age should have to take a drivers road test every five years. There are a lot of really shitty drivers out there, and maybe they shouldn't get renewed. What about cell phone/bluetooth users, smokers, eaters, and all the other weird things people do when driving?
