As a writer myself, and in this case, more importantly, a reader being asked to judge in a competition, a theme IS needed. Otherwise, I have no idea how to choose something. One person could write a poem that leads them to become the next Chaucer or Shakespeare, and then one person could write a Michael Chrichton quality tickling thriller novel.
How in the name of Hell do I pick one of those?
If you are a writer then you should know that not everyone is gifted on making same theme storyline... but I highly doubt you get my point. One are gifted to write about fantasy, some are for reality, some for screen plays. This is why theme is either a power up for one and down side for others.
Not that it matters, but I voted against this theme thing. As an 'writer', although I don't call myself that anymore... with all my works, even my comic gone after an pc failure, I find that bounding and suppressing my desire to write...
