Signature pictures

Is a signature picture the same as an avatar? I keep trying to install a signature picture. I see here in the Technical Assistance forum that avatars have been disabled, but I still see signature pictures in people's posts.

signature pics are different from avatars, but the forum doesn't host your signature. The image has to be hosted on another website and then you link to it in your signture.
