Slavery payments have always been a hot topic and during the vote for Texas Gov, last year, Dem. Tony Sanchez, eager for the "minority vote" said it should "be carefully considered".

I have different thought, however. Slavery is wrong. You will get no argument from me on that at all.

But also I do not think we should have to pay, for what happened 200 years ago.

What do you think?

If you believe that folks should be paid for something that happened 180 years before they were even born, then we all need to move out of the country and give it back to the Native Americans, no?

I'm a liberal, but I think nothing will ever make up for the sad legacy of slavery. Furthermore, such payments would not be practical. There are other better ways of addressing racial and economic injustice. Even Bill Clinton (as far as I know) doesn't believe in the idea of slavery reparations.

I agree that slavery, in any fashion, is wrong. But at the same time, I am not to blame for what happened 200 years ago.

IMHO, those who think they "deserve" the money, are just looking for yet another free ride because of the "race game".

Good point, AW. We non-Native Americans would have to go back to Europe, Asia, Africa, or wherever our ancestors came from, which wouldn't sit well with those of us who were BORN in this country, including yours truly. Nice line of reasoning there. 🙂

I know! I'm part Mexican, Italian, French, and German. Where would I go??? 😕

What about my wife? Her father was adopted, so we don't even know her ethnic background! Where would she go??? :idunno:

This is one of those things politicians do to get votes. They know in practice this is just too much of a logistical nightmare to do. They mention only to help get votes from the liberal sector and blacks. You want to help the poor black community in some part of town build some businesses there, or build a college or something. That would be far more beneficial then this lip service ideal of reparations.

Buy a man some fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and he eats for a lifetime

FlatFoot made some good points on this, where would they go?🙁 😕

Hm..

Well, I think that paying for something I did not do...is absurd. In all honesty, I would move from this country if such a thing came to pass.

sorry but this is just plain wrong!
what do you call a person that was born in france? a native frenchman right? what do you call a person born in japan? a native nippon, right? so by the use of common sense (i know it's not very common) since i'm a second generation born american, i'm a native american!
and for everyones information, through genetic tests it has been proven that the "american indians" are the decendents of the mongole tribes of asia!
as far as reperations go ,if any black person wants it, i say give it to them, 40 acres, and a mule, but back in africa! not here!

Another line of reasoning I thought of:

If a man goes out and commits crimes, (i.e. robs a bank, kills someone) but meets his demise before he can be brought to justice, do you then toss his son in jail to make up for it?

Ya know, ironically enough, I think this IS a custom in some countries (Or was one at one time)!

Correct, Flatfoot. It was a very common pratice in Medevil Euope among members of the Royal Family. They had a servant (or slave, if you will) and since the children of the Royal Family were very seldom punished, it was a common pratice to beat the servant whenever the child of royalty committed an act un-becoming of them.

That is where the term "whipping boy" comes from.

I knew about the whipping boy, but I also think in some places the crimes of the father can still taint the reputation of the son...or...something like that...

Couldn't think of a better way to word myself in my sleepy state.

I dunno, only time I've heard of that is from the Batman novel, "Knightfall", where that guy , Bane was originally a kid who got sentenced to prison because of what his dad did...before he was even freakin BORN! I'm not sure if they used a real country's name(where the prison Bane was raised in was supposed to be..) in that book, though.

Train a man how to teach others to fish and you change an entire society.

Train a man how to turn other men into fish and you could fill an aquarium.😀
